Surgeon General Vivek Murthy talks about the need for a "whole-of-society approach" to advancing social connection. We've tried to heed that call in our work at Einhorn Collaborative, supporting a broader range of efforts that engage actors across sectors. That includes: Projects like Team Up to enlist large national civic organizations with a presence in local communities to help people build connection across difference through service. Research groups like Building H to measure the impact of products on consumers’ health and urge companies to do better to improve social connection and other health outcomes. Initiatives like Human Connections AI to bring together social connection experts with technologists to puzzle through how AI companions can be designed to enhance and not degrade human relationships. Another project that has helped us explore a facet of the whole-of-society approach is the Connective Tissue Framework, which puts forward a range of recommendations for how government – especially at the local level – can create the structural conditions and everyday opportunities for people to experience healthy connection. Funders and nonprofits are working in complex and rapidly changing environments where no single organization or individual has access to all information and does not have control over all the actors in an ecosystem. Strategy in complex systems must serve as a compass instead of a map, laying out a clear direction and focus for the work and then enabling learning and course correction along the way. For funders focused on systems change, applying trust-based principles to the strategy setting process is imperative for navigating the complexity inherent in systems. Combatting wicked challenges like climate change: The role of innovation districts Tackling climate change requires real-world testing and experimentation by individuals working across sectors and disciplines. Our in-depth empirical research of over 20 innovation districts has revealed some compelling strengths and promising directions these districts are taking. Districts were found to primarily focus on four areas: Reducing the carbon footprint through new building materials; Developing new energy solutions to power their district or feed into a microgrid; Undertaking interdisciplinary R&D focused on climate mitigation and climate adaptation solutions; Supporting clusters of spinoffs and startups focused on climate solutions. Here are some standout examples: ▶ Tonsley Innovation District (Adelaide, Australia): Home to Australia's pioneering green hydrogen electrolysis and distribution facility, Tonsley is a testbed for decarbonization technologies. It prioritizes distributed renewable energy generation, material circularity, and future mobility solutions, aiming to meet 100% of its electricity needs from renewables. ▶ MIND Milano Innovation District (Italy): MIND is a zero-carbon urban regeneration project powered solely by renewable energy sources. Its smart grid and district-wide heating and cooling network function as a giant thermal battery, scalable to an entire city. ▶ Oslo Science City (Norway): Reflecting Norway's leadership in renewable energy, Oslo Science City focuses on climate scenarios, building adaptation, and carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies. It aims to reduce carbon emissions by 95% by 2030, leveraging expertise in civil engineering, sensors, and real-time data analysis. These and other trends will be discussed and debated at GIID’s Inaugural Global Summit in Monterrey, Mexico, which will be held on April 9-11, 2025. Tailor your fundraising strategies and messaging to resonate with each segment, maximizing engagement and donor satisfaction. 🟠 Strategic Partnerships: Identify potential strategic partners, including corporate sponsors, foundations, community organizations, and major donors. Cultivate meaningful relationships that align with your fundraising goals and leverage these partnerships for mutual benefit. 🟠 Fundraising Tactics: Develop a comprehensive fundraising plan that outlines specific tactics and channels for reaching your fundraising goals. This may include direct mail campaigns, online fundraising platforms, major donor cultivation events, grant writing, planned giving programs, and more. 🟠 Budgeting and Resource Allocation: Allocate resources strategically to support your fundraising initiatives.
