My Thoughts:

I have really been enjoying the growing family and community of the Coulter brothers. What started out as the oldest brother trying to keep all of his family safe and their secret of the sapphires, they mine under wraps, has turned at times frustrating and downright dangerous. As we get each brother's story, this one is Miles, he is the youngest of the six brothers.

While out on the property he runs into surveyors for the railroad. The brothers are already on high alert with an evil man and his henchman on the prowl, so not trusting this team of surveyors and their story is understandable. Except for Miles who is smitten with the lone female, Clara on the team.

Clara is running from an unwanted suitor back home and has come with her uncle to see more of the country. But what turns out as an adventure not only lands her and her uncle in danger but also lands her right in the open arms of Miles Coulter.

Can these two survive long enough to act on their feelings, or is the danger and Miles' family too big of stumbling blocks? I enjoyed this continuing adventure and am looking forward to the next book which wraps up the Coulter's family saga. Each story pulls us deeper into this family circle and the loyalty and love and yes, sometimes overprotectiveness is a sight to behold. Great storytelling.

Surveying the Wild West: How Surveyors Mapped the Frontier in the 1870s

One of the things I love about writing historical romance is the detail I get to research for each book. So much of my research doesn’t make it into the story, but I still love to learn it!

In Guarding the Mountain Man’s Secret, our heroine and her uncle are working with a group of surveyors to map out potential routes for the coming railroad.

Surveying back then was no walk in the park. These brave folks had to trek through some seriously rough terrain, lugging around heavy equipment like compasses, levels, and surveyor’s chains. The chains were a whopping 66 feet long, with 100 links! Surveyors would stretch them out to measure distances, and let me tell you, it was no easy feat.

One of the surveyor’s secret weapons was triangulation. By measuring angles between distant points and doing some fancy math, they could figure out exactly where landmarks were and create a grid of reference points across the land. This technique was a game-changer, allowing for more accurate maps that covered bigger areas.

In my story, the surveying was done for the railroad. But history tells us that later in 1879, the U.S. Geological Survey stepped onto the scene with a larger mission: to create detailed maps of the entire country, including the wild, wild West. Surveyors working for this agency had their work cut out for them. They battled through dense forests, climbed steep mountains, and crossed dangerous rivers, all to gather the data needed for these maps.

So the next time you look at a map of the American West, give a nod to those early surveyors. These hardworking folks played a huge role in shaping the frontier, giving settlers the information they needed to build new lives and communities. Without their dedication and skill, the West might have remained a mystery forever!

My Thoughts:

This was a completely chilling and engrossing read of one woman's plight and descent into a mad house. Edyth Blaire is a young wealthy woman who has lost her parents. She is put into the care of her uncle, whom she believed loved her. Edyth was a bit of a tomboy and did not really fit into the norms of her generation. Her father encouraged her, but the rest of society looked down upon her.

So, what does Edyth do? Well, she continues to live her life as she wanted, and she shuns most of society. Sound like something we might all do, until it comes back to haunt her in a big way. Unfortunately, her uncle really just loves her fortune and finds a way to have Edyth sent to the asylum on Blackwell's Island.

The author really lets us into the historical details of what living at that asylum was like, the abuses, the tortures, and the gray chamber. It was a chilling read as the law was on her uncle's side and poor Edyth could not really help herself on the inside. It was also a really interesting compare and contrast of who to believe and who was really insane and who was not.

The author does give us a wonderful hero by the name of Bane who will stop at nothing to save his beloved. Edyth and Bane have been friends for a long time and their love naturally grew out of that friendship. Even though their romance is not the main story, their love grows in a lovely way and we as the reader, and Edyth need that before the horrors begin.

This book was previously published under the name the Gray Chamber that I read before. I had not realized that with the new name and even better cover, but it is still a chilling read full of historical details of a young woman’s fight to save herself.

I am thrilled to share with you my FIRST novel in the HEIRESSES OF ADVENTURE series, MISS BLAIRE IN BLACKWELL’S ISLAND, which is set in New York City in 1887. I loved writing about Edyth Blaire, our cat-rescuing, spunky heroine who spends her days painting, fencing with her dreamy instructor, and avoiding society at all costs, which as you can imagine, comes back to haunt her before the end. I’ve never written about a character who despised reading, so that was a new one for me. Edyth just doesn’t like to sit still long enough to finish a book, but you’ll find out why later.

While writing this book, I am pretty certain the librarians at my local branch were wondering what in the world my hobbies are, judging from the stacks of fencing books for beginners, histories of New York crime in the 19^th century, and Nellie Bly’s Ten Days in a Mad-House, and more.

The inspiration for this book came from Nellie Bly’s scandalous exposé for Joseph Pulitzer’s newspaper, The World. In reading Nellie’s articles, I was shocked at the grounds by which the asylum would commit women and that’s when I discovered a tiny mention about an heiress with family members who had her tucked away so they could have her fortune. . . and Edyth Blaire was born.

My Thoughts:

This story started out with Ellie dropping her favorite bowl at the banging of a fist on her door and the angry shouts of a man. That man was Brody MacKenzie, a man trying to locate his two runaway brothers. I have to say that was quite a beginning sentence, and sets up a story full of treasure hunting, familial bonds, danger, and of course, romance.

Ellie and her family run a ranch and orphanage to give orphaned kids an education and teach them a skill so that they have a chance in life. This is where newly minted doctor, Brody finds his brothers thriving after running away from their abusive late father. Intent on taking them back home to Boston to fulfill a promise and pay back a debt, Brody never imagines he would be up against Ellie and her family. They actually care what happens to his wayward brothers despite their mischievous ways and treasure hunting. And if Brody was willing, they also have a need for a doctor.

I liked both Ellie and Brody and knew they would make a great match. Brody is a loving older brother, cares for the patients, and is a man of his word. Ellie has a servant's heart and loves unconditionally. Brody and Ellie agree to help one another in the doctoring and the treasure hunting and in doing so the inevitable happens and they fall in love. However, neither one of them are aware of a danger lurking in the shadows, watching and waiting to strike.

This is a great start to a new series. I was a little confused at first as there seemed to be some stories that I missed concerning some of the characters, like this wasn't the first in the series. I had to check and sure enough this seems to be following another series that I haven't had the pleasure of reading yet. Once this story gets going it stands well on its own.

My Thoughts:

It was fun going back for a visit to Cedar Creek and catching up with RaeLyn driving around in her old red truck Tilly. Visiting again with the Hadley family whose antique store is going well and the growing relationship between RaeLyn and Mason her boyfriend. This time the cozy mystery focuses around the vandalization of RaeLyn's best friend, Tasha's inn that she has been renovating to open up. Who could have done such a thing? Well even in this small town there is a list of suspects and RaeLyn is bound and determined to get to the culprit.

If you like cozy mystery, deep friendships, a little bit of southern family, and great characters, this is a fun series. I was happy to see some new romances bloom and RaeLyn's take a dramatic turn. All in all, a fun read for any day of the week.

My Thoughts on An Overdue Match by Sarah Monzon

My Thoughts:

Wow! What a fun, swoony story this was. I knew this was going to be a good one with the cover and title alone, and I was right. This story has themes of not judging others, loving oneself, and unconditional love tied up with great banter and dare I say kisses.

Evangeline Kelly is a librarian who is hiding a big secret. She has alopecia and has even moved from her hometown to get away from everyone she believes is pitying her. Especially the man who broke her heart into a million pieces. Now with a wig, fake eyelashes, and temporary eyebrow tattoos, Evangline is ready to face the world but never love again. No, she decides that being a secret matchmaker is her calling now since no one could ever possibly love her.

Enter Tai Davis who has the profession of tattoo artist and in Evangeline's eyes, bad boy who needs to be avoided at all costs. Well, Tai wonders who Evangline is to judge a book by its cover without getting to know him. Besides, she intrigues him, and he just can't ger her out of his mind. So what entails is somewhat of a comedy with romantic gestures of epic proportions along with deeper truths we all could take a lesson from.

I really liked how the author really got us in both of the characters heads. Evangline's condition was explained so well and Tai, well Tai is definitely a book hero I will not be forgetting soon. I will be rereading this one again and again.

My Thoughts:

Viewpoints and worlds collide when a Southern belle and a Union Lieutenant meet and fall in love. Savannah Adair has a major wakeup call when Union soldiers march into her hometown and set up new rules. Her slaves are set free, she has wounded soldiers in her living room, her father has not come back home from his business trip, and so it is just her mother and her. Savannah nor her mother know how to do anything basic, like cooking, making coffee, or lighting a fire. While I was reading about their struggles, I thought about their reliance on slaves and being pampered their whole lives, was something of a form of slavery itself. A bit of a knowledge gap. So, they must hire friends to come and help them.

During all this, First Lieutenant Travis Lawson has come to Savannah’s town to occupy, keep order, and try to rebuild. There are bad and good people on both sides of the war and Travis’s job is not easy when he is trying to keep law and order. His own Union soldiers are not helping either. Looting and thievery is much too common on everyone in this war. All sides have lost much. His one bright spot is the feisty Savannah, whom he cannot seem to stop thinking about.

As they get to know one another and an uneasy trust develops, so does those romantic feelings. Can a Union soldier and a staunch and firm Southern belle find love amidst war, treachery, and chaos? What if one of them does the unthinkable in a time of war? The title says it all and what a journey these two have to that healing.

As I typed away on this final book in my Spies of the Civil War Series, it felt as if I’d written the entire series to tell this story.

Previously, I had felt a similar importance of an as yet unpublished two-book contemporary series, but the sense that the whole series climaxed with the final book was as surprising as it was welcome.

Because it seemed as if everything that happened in all the earlier books culminated in Book 6 for me as an author. Its significance reverberated in my soul while still researching the events…and weeks before I sat to pen the first page, the first paragraph, the first sentence.

That sense of importance made this book difficult to begin. The early chapters took far longer to write than normal.

I believe that those who only read Tides of Healing will have a satisfying, complete story. Those who read the entire series in order—or at least Books 4-6 set in Vicksburg—will experience a deeper impact as the characters’ stories build on one another.

There is a song in Tides of Healing. As an author, the impact of the lyrics within the story preceded it, meaning that I knew a certain song would play a significant role while still in the research phase.

Let me explain.

When I’m researching a story, I read a variety of nonfiction resources including diaries, journals, and newspaper accounts. My research for Vicksburg during the Civil War led me to song lyrics written by the enslaved.

African American Spirituals, also called Negro Spirituals, were sung before and after the Civil War. These Christian songs served a variety of purposes beyond bolstering hope and faith during dark days. They told stories about Biblical characters like Moses. Some comforted the sorrowful and some rejoiced with the joyful. They were sung in churches, in camp meetings, and in the fields.

They often contained secret messages. “Home” in a song can refer to Heaven, but the secret meaning was a free country. Author Frederick Douglas had been a former slave. He wrote that the lyrics to “O Canaan, Sweet Canaan” signified more than a hope of Heaven. Repeated singing of the lyrics “I am bound for the land of Canaan” announced an intention to go North, their Canaan.

The Underground Railroad is a theme in Tides of Healing. In 1828, Reverend John Rankin built his home on a hill overlooking the Ohio River in Ripley, Ohio. As a station on the Underground Railroad, this home was easily seen from the opposite side of the river in the slave state of Kentucky. Runaways waited for a boat to take them across the river.

It surprised me to learn that the lyrics of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” are about this station. “I looked over Jordan and what did I see?” refers to the Ohio River. The band of angels are people who rowed them across the wide river to the free state of Ohio.

Neither of these songs is referenced in Tides of Healing. The tune that is in my story was a popular spiritual leading up to the war. I listened to it many times. The message took root in my heart long before it affected my characters.

My research trip to Vicksburg’s battlefield and museums inspired the writing of Streams of Courage, Book 4, River of Peril, Book 5, and Tides of Healing, Book 6.

Avenue of Betrayal, Book 1, is set in the Union capital of Washington City (Washington DC) in 1861, where a surprising number of Confederate sympathizers and spies lived. Boulevard of Confusion and Byway to Danger are set in Richmond, the Confederate capital in 1862. Actual historical spies touch the lives of our fictional family. The heroines in Books 1 – 3 are two sisters and their cousins. Another set of characters begin with Book 4, and three friends are the heroines in Books 4 -6.

Through both real and fictional characters, this series highlights activities spies were involved in and some of the motives behind their decisions.

My Thoughts:

What a sweet and lovely romance this was. The story was one that I needed as I fell into the pages of Eleanor and Edmund's lives and their budding romantic relationship.

Both of these two have unimaginable pain of lost loved ones. Eleanor's pain revolves around her father and trying to keep her family home for her and her mother. They have hit financial hardship so Eleanor, twenty-five and believed to be past marrying, becomes a governess to a duke's niece. That duke is Edmund.

Edmund is the sole guardian of his niece after a terrible accident took the rest of his family away. Now intent on never loving again, as love hurts too much, he only wants to provide a wonderful life for his niece, Rose.

However, as these two hurting souls meet, their connection is strong and only grows as they become friends, and each one tries to hide their romantic feelings. What I liked about this novel was it really focused on these two. There were problems that did arise and needed to be dealt with, but the core of the book seemed to be about these two and finding love at last. His niece was such a sweetheart. It was nice to read a story with a well-behaved child.

In His Grace’s Governess, much trouble befalls Edmund and Eleanor as they attempt to sort out their close proximity to and burgeoning feelings for one another, but there is one scene in particular that I enjoyed researching.

In one scene of the novel, Mr. Roskilly(the gardener at Ivy Grange Estate) worries at Eleanor plucking the plant Rabelera–otherwise known as Greater Stitchwort–from the ground. He fears that danger will befall Eleanor if she takes it from the garden and Eleanor, misunderstanding him, even believes at one point that Mr. Roskilly might be threatening her. But, why is Mr. Roskilly so worried? Is he really so concerned that Edmund’s hackles will be raised when he sees that Eleanor has plucked a few mere flowers from the garden–and with his niece, no less?

Indeed, that is not where his concern lies, for if you read the passage closely, you’ll see that Mr. Roskilly is Cornish. This is an important factor. When doing my research for the novel, I found that, in Cornwall, it is believed that Greater Stitchwort is the property of the pixies. It is believed that to pick it is to take it from them and to anger them, and if you anger them then there is all the chance that they may well retaliate for you having stolen what was theirs. Truly, they may even enchant you, according to legend. Having read this and being sufficiently intrigued, the scene was born! I do hope you get as much enjoyment out of it as I do.

Here is an excerpt from it so you know what I’m referring to:

“Hope yer walk’s went well. ’Tis a fine day fer one.” He grinned, revealing a mouth full of crooked teeth. His Cornish accent was thick, with a friendly tone to his voice.

Eleanor returned his smile and nodded. “It certainly is. What better way to spend a morning than to enjoy the sun in these beautiful gardens? They’re the finest I’ve ever seen.”

She could’ve sworn there was a hint of a blush on the man’s tawny face. “I than’ ye, miss. We do our righ’ bes’, and keepin’ i’ as i’ is makes ’is Grace ’appy. Ever since…” The man trailed off, a growing look of concern on his face.

What had he been about to say? Something about the duke or his family?

“Greater Stitchwort.” He spoke with a grave edge to his words, looking intently at the flower in Rose’s hand.

Eleanor’s gaze flitted from the man to the flower, her brows furrowing. “Is something wrong, sir?”

The man tilted his head, flicking his eyes to the side in a plea for a private conversation.

I will not say whether this decision to pick the plant affected Eleanor later on in the story or not, but I’ll leave you with this: Do consider all of the plants you touch before you decide to place your hand upon them and pull them from the ground.
