Review of New Release- Spring's Pact by Dora Hiers

Will Spring finally discover the God who heals and see Beckett as a faithful man who's loved her through it all?

Fifteen years ago, Beckett Danver made a pact with his best friend on the back steps of their group home. Now nearing his thirtieth birthday, he's ready to follow through on that promise. He'd fallen in love with the spunky girl who insisted on playing every sport as well as the boys, and he loves her even more now, a beautiful woman inside and out, the sass and spice covering up the pain that still lurks in the shadows of her fragile heart. He's just been waiting for her to "catch" up with him.

Spring Season needs a plan to derail any misguided ideas Beckett might have about proposing. Sure, they'd made a pact, but sheesh, they were just kids. She'd just found out that he was getting adopted and leaving the group home, and he'd found her sobbing on the back porch. Her childhood crush had slid a homemade leather ring over her finger and vowed never to forget her and to marry her once he turned thirty. But even back then she knew she'd never follow through with it. After being dumped into the group home with her three sisters, Spring plans to steer clear of love and marriage and definitely children. No, thank you. Spring is perfectly content to stay happily single for the rest of her life, pact or not.

But is she happy? Truly? With her stomach always a tight knot of nerves and fear, the only reprieve she ever gets is on the softball field. And she's seen how Beckett's faith changed him, how the chip he used to carry on his shoulder as a boy had slipped off, replaced with kindness and compassion and a heart for kids. She wants that for herself, for all the broken places in her to be healed and whole, but she's damaged for life. The police officer deserves someone better than one of those poor little Season sisters. Now if she can only convince her heart of that…

Will Spring finally discover the God who heals and see Beckett as a faithful man who's loved her through it all? Through the ugly and the painful, through the bitter and the broken, he longs to be with her in the beautiful forever. Or will she keep looking through the lens of the past and not see what a glorious future they could have together? A future that embraces love and healing and the family that she's always secretly craved…

MY REVIEW

Spring's Pact is a wonderfully written sweet romance that will capture your heart from the beginning of the first few pages. The main characters, Spring Season and Beckett Danver, are well-developed and have many layers. The storyline has a few tender subjects but is handled well, and I felt compassion for the Season family.

Spring comes to feel God's love through faith, forgiveness, and God's healing. There are tense moments, but then there are lots of sweet ones. I think this is one of the author's best yet. Highly recommended. The uplifting ending wrapped up everything nicely.

I received and ARC from the author; a positive review is not required. All opinions are my own.

 MY REVIEW

Starting Again is a sweet coming-of-age story about Maggie. She is starting college and has a letter-writing relationship with a soldier. Although exciting, it leads her to indecision when the soldier reveals too much of his feelings.

The story was interesting, with good pacing and descriptions of the town and the everyday life of the 1950s. There was good tension between Maggie and Tom as they tried to conquer each circumstance they faced. The Christian element of the story was weaved into it without being preachy but with biblical truths that fit the circumstances.

MY REVIEW

Right Before Their Eyes is a beautifully written story that has exciting and memorable characters and a plot that will touch your heart many times as you turn the pages. There is lots of tension, unexpected circumstances, and characters with depth and many layers entrenching you deep into the story.

I loved how their faith and trust in God deeply moved some characters to lead them. Others, even deeply affected by health issues, let God's light shine through them in the midst of darkness.

This is one of the best books I've read. I was moved by every heart-twisted circumstance, and the author's descriptive writing brought the story to life. I felt as though I was there. Highly recommended. I can't wait to read the next installment in the series.

MY REVIEW

This is a wonderful addition to the Love at the Lighthouse series. Emma Row takes a chance and puts her life behind her as she marries Michael, a widowed lighthouse keeper with an eleven-year-old daughter, Ada. She becomes an obstacle that takes a toll on their new marriage.

The storyline is filled with frustration, new beginnings, doubt, and jealousy. I loved how the author weaved God's message of love throughout the story.

The description of the lighthouse and surrounding areas brought the story to life. There were tense moments that made me wonder if the relationship would end badly, but then heartwarming moments gave me a ray of hope. The characters had me drawn into the story right away. They had many layers that contained past heartbreak, and I rooted for them as hope became evident. I highly recommend it.

I received an ARC from the author; a positive review is not required. All opinions are my own.

More from Susan

An interview with best-selling inspirational historical fiction author Susan G Mathis.

The third novel of your new three-book series called Love in a Lighthouse is out. Tell us about that, please.

Join the Row-family women, Libby, Julia, and Emma, as they navigate the isolation, danger, and hope for lasting love at three different Thousand Island lighthouses in the St. Lawrence River. [Note: These can be read in any order.]

What inspired you to write Emma’s Engagement?

I have visited Rock Island Lighthouse a number of times, and it’s a beautiful lighthouse. It’s along the main shipping channel and it’s a New York State Park accessible by boat, so it’s a great place to visit. When I was asked to write a lighthouse series, I just had to write about it!

Why did you write about the Diepolder’s being a stepfamily?

The Diepolder’s story is true, though I had to imagine some of the details. Not only did I grow up in a stepfamily and became a step family when I married Dale, but my late husband and I wrote, The Remarriage Adventure, a premarital book for couples getting ready for remarriage. So, I had lots of fodder to explore the challenges of step parenting.

What was your hardest scene to write?

It’s always hard to inflict pain on the characters you’ve grown to love, so having Emma in so much pain from Ada’s rejection and the adjustment to a new marriage and stepparenting was difficult. As readers journey with her, they witness the challenges and the adjustments necessary. Her trials not only reveal Emma’s character but also influences her decisions and relationships throughout the story.

Why do you write about the Thousand Islands?

I grew up just twenty minutes from the Thousand Islands—the setting for all my stories—in upstate New York. Actually, half of the 1,864 islands are in NY and the other half in Ontario, Canada. So, I spent every summer and more exploring the beautiful region. I’ve stayed on several of the islands and camped and rented cottages there. So, after I wrote my debut novel about the largest island, Wolfe Island, I was hooked. There are so many fascinating stories to tell.

Now, I take an annual Thousand Islands Book Tour to the islands where I meet with fans, friends, and family. I’ve stayed in Singer Castle, Casa Blanca, and other places that are the settings of my book. I’ve talked with the owners of the islands, local historians, and researched in the Thousand Islands archives. All my novels are based on a specific place in the Thousand Islands and are the true stories of the owners of that island. So, my plot is generally true. Then I overlay the storyline of the fictional servants to create the story. This makes my stories a bit more challenging, but I love a good challenge.

“I love introducing the Thousand Islands to readers and have heard from dozens that the area is now a favorite summer destination,” Mathis says.

MY REVIEW

The Amish Baker Caper takes you to a small Amish Community where living is simple and safe—that is until it isn't!

The author's easy writing style and vivid descriptions had me engaged from the beginning. The main characters' strengths and weaknesses made them appear real, and many layers were uncovered throughout the reading of the story.

The story will take you on a roller-coaster ride of clues leading up to solving a mystery that affects most of the town. If you enjoy Amish stories, mystery & suspense, you will enjoy this one. Highly recommended.

Review of Charlotte McMaster and the Messenger Angel by Terry Overton

About the Book

Book: Charlotte McMaster and the Messenger Angel

Author: Terry Overton

Genre: Middle Grade Reader Fiction

Release date: November 26, 2024

Charlotte McMaster is in trouble. Some innocent memes shared to the whole school have resulted in community service at a rehabilitation center for the elderly. But her time with Mrs. Abigail Hooper will at least get her out of the tension at home, where her father stays out late working and her mother spends a lot of time worrying.

But when Mrs. Hooper invites Charlotte to spend time in her garden, she tells Charlotte about an angel that appeared to her when her husband died. Charlotte is drawn to the elderly woman and soon finds herself bringing her best friend, Ellie, on her visits as well. My Review
The main characters bring the storyline to life in a very easy-to-read style. Charlotte is a little rebellious and quirky but helpful. A mistake made at school results in detention and community service. Little does she know that it might be part of God's plan.

I loved how Charlotte and Ellie grew in their spiritual walk as the story unfolded. It's a warm, sweet, and inspirational story for anyone of any age. Highly recommended.

More from Terry

My daughter is an amazing person. After having three children, she and her husband felt God calling them to do more for children without parents. They fostered eleven children. But one year, they were asked to foster a newborn infant whose mother was no longer able to care for any of her children due to drug addiction. It was not that the child was rejected by his mother but that she could not care for him.

My daughter brought him home from the hospital at the age of three days while he was having withdrawal symptoms from meth. After a few months, they decided to adopt the child. The process took a while because, for a short time, the child was allowed to return to his birth mother. He now lives with my daughter’s family, and he is an absolute delight and a great addition to the household. Charlotte McMaster and The Messenger Angel is dedicated to my daughter.

It is a middle-grade reader about a middle school girl who, while wrestling with the question of being adopted and being rejected by her birth mother, meets a fascinating elderly lady. The vision of an angel provides help and guidance as this young girl comes to realize her adoptive parents were selected for her by God.

This story conveys themes of healing, hope, and spiritual discovery. Through the character of Charlotte McMaster, the novel explores how a young girl, navigating the challenges of family tension and personal identity, seeks guidance from earthly and Heavenly sources. The elderly Mrs. Abigail Hooper tells Charlotte about her own experience with an angel. This introduces Charlotte to the idea of divine presence, sparking her curiosity about her past and adoption.

Excerpt

“He’s going to kill us!” Janel scrambled over the SUV’s center console as Zach crawled out through his

window. Waiting for him to clear the threshold so that she could follow sent her thumping heart into

overdrive. “Hurry!”

A second bullet fired with a bang and shattered the back passenger window. Fear reverberated down

her spine.

Zach reached inside, grabbed her upper arms and pulled her out into the chest-high raging waters.

She gripped his broad shoulders as the frigid temperature assaulted her senses, and the undertow kept

her boots from gaining purchase on the rocks below. The ping of another bullet made her shudder.

Using the SUV’s door as a shield, they each took hold of the window frame to keep from being swept

away. Janel leaned toward the closed back seat window, daring a quick glance at the shooter. He sat on

his motorcycle up on the cliff, ready to take aim.

She panicked and ducked.

Water hit her face.

A bullet whizzed over the SUV, inches from where she’d been seconds ago.

My Thoughts

Book 3 of the Red Rock Country series. This book had me enthralled from the beginning. I couldn't put it down.

There was one action scene after another as Zach tries to protect Janel and her sister from the people who want them dead. The storyline is exciting, with mystery, romance, and some very unnerving twists.

The characters were down to earth, struggled with their faith, and tried to protect the ones they loved. The ending wrapped everything up nicely. Another great read from the author. Highly recommended.

Thoughts on the Book

Tracking the Missing is a high suspense and mystery with a second chance at love added. It has everything you want in a suspense novel-an absolute page-turner. I finished it in one sitting.

The characters are amazing, intense with many layers. Due to their strengths, as well as their flaws, they became real to me. The setting of wintertime in the mountains, added an extra element of concern for the missing.

Michael's dog, Ducky, a search and rescue, never ceased to amaze me with his incredible instinct. Michael and Tori were both going through some emotional and physical setbacks that made them dig deep to resolve. The Christian element woven into the story gave it an even deeper meaning and touched my heart as I read.
