About the Book

Book: Lily and the Lawman

Author: Erica Vetsch

Genre: Christian Historical Fiction

Release Date: October 13, 2025

A desperate aunt and a duty-bound sheriff—thrown into marriage by necessity, driven by danger, and risking everything to rescue a child…and their hearts.

All Lily Whitman wants is to open her bakery and provide a good life for her sister and infant niece. But when her niece is kidnapped by a ruthless gang, Lily is frantic to get her back. The only one who can help is the new acting sheriff, Trace McConnell. Though she’s sworn never to trust a man again, she finds herself forced to rely on this quiet lawman—worse, she’s forced to marry him to protect her reputation during the search.

Trace McConnell, a man who sees the world in black and white, does everything by the book, and keeps his feelings to himself. He’s dreamed of being a real lawman his whole life, not just a temporary replacement. When a U.S. Marshal arrives with news of a child kidnapping ring, Trace sees his chance to prove himself worthy of the badge. But his new “wife” keeps throwing his carefully laid plans into chaos with her determination to help—and his growing feelings for her threaten to compromise his focus on justice.

Can two people burned by past betrayals learn to trust again in time to save an innocent child? Or will their fears cost them not only their chance at love, but the life of the baby they’re desperate to rescue?

About the Author

Best-selling, award-winning author of The Debutante’s Code, first in the Thorndike & Swann Regency Mystery Series, Erica Vetsch loves Jesus, history, romance, and sports. When she’s not writing fiction, she’s planning her next trip to a history museum.

More from Erica

Lily and the Lawman has one of my favorite opening lines that I’ve ever written.

No man should have to arrest his own father—at least not more than once a month.

And so begins Trace McConnell’s adventure to lasting happiness. Trace is a lawman, and his father is the town drunk. He heads out on the trail of some bad men who have kidnapped a baby girl. He doesn’t go alone, the child’s aunt goes with him. Mayhem, danger, and love along the way happen, hopefully leading to a satisfying conclusion for everyone but the bad guy.

But I wanted to talk about first lines in fiction. First lines have to do some heavy lifting! So much responsibility! If you are a writer, you have to consider so many things when writing that first line. Does it set the tone of the book? Does it reveal something up front about the character? Does it make the reader ask a question? Does it make the reader want to continue on to see what happens next?

When I’m writing a new story, I often put in all capital letters in the first draft: WRITE A GREAT FIRST LINE HERE. Then I go on with the opening scene.

You see, there is something intimidating in starting a new story, seeing all the blank, white space where words need to go. And it’s worse when you know how important a first line can be. So I put in a place holder. Often I don’t know what the first line should be until I’m into the story a ways. Only rarely do I know what the first line will be, and even then I often change it later.

When I need inspiration, I peruse my bookshelves to read first lines. Here are two of my favorites, both from the late secular writer, Dick Francis

From To the Hilt: I don’t think my stepfather much minded dying. That he almost took me with him wasn’t really his fault.

From Longshot: I accepted a commission that had been turned down by four other writers, but I was hungry at the time.

Do you have a favorite first line?

My Review

I have enjoyed reading Erica Vetsch's Brides of the West series and was excited to have the opportunity to read the fifth installment, Lily and the Lawman. I adored Trace and Lily's story. I found this adventure to fun and entertaining. It was full of love, faith, and action. I had no problem reading the whole book in one sitting and was a perfect way to spend my afternoon on a beautiful fall day.

I am going to give Lily and the Lawman a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who love to read clean historical romance. I look forward to reading the next book from the Brides of the West series. Maggie and the Maverick.

I received a digital copy of Erica Vetsch's Lily and the Lawman from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

Review: The Red Cottage by Hannah Linder

The Red Cottage
by Hannah Linder

Blurb:

She forgot she loved him.
He would die to make her remember.

Meg Foxcroft has never minded the tattling village gossip or her uncle’s ill-tempered rebukes. After all, she has Tom McGwen—and one day, they will build their own cottage, paint it red, and live a wonderful life.

But then the unthinkable happens. Meg is attacked, her uncle’s apothecary shop goes up in flames, and when she wakes up in the arms of an eloquent lord, she remembers nothing. Not even her own name.

In a frantic race against time, Tom plunges into dangerous water, bent on sheltering Meg from harm and discovering who wants her dead. Even if she despises him. Even if it’s now the handsome lord she casts her smile upon.

As danger swells and truth comes crashing around them, Meg must confront the past and decide who she trusts—and loves—before the enemy makes the final strike.

My Review:

When I saw the cover and read the blurb for The Red Cottage by Hannah Linder, I instantly was intrigued and knew I had to get my hands on it. I was far from being disappointed. I was quickly thrown back in time to 1818 era of Cornwell with Meg and Tom. I thought their story was full of adventure, love, mystery, and suspense. I loved getting to know the two and enjoyed taking this journey with them.

I believe that The Red Cottage deserves a five star rating. I have no doubt other readers who love to read clean historical regency romance. I would love to read more like this one from Hannah Linder in the future. She has earned herself a new fan here.

I received a paperback copy of Hannah Linder's The Red Cottage from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

About the Author

Cindy Kay Stewart, a retired high school social studies and special education teacher, writes stories of hope, steeped in love, and anchored in faith. Passionate about revealing God’s handiwork in history, Cindy loves to research until she uncovers hidden gems to share with her readers. She resides in North Georgia with her college sweetheart. Her daughter, son-in-law, and four adorable grandchildren live nearby.

More from Cindy

Those who love learning about bygone eras through fiction, will enjoy escaping to WWII Norway and France in Unending Hope, Book 2 in the Circle of Hope series. This novel follows the adventures of former boarding school classmates who vowed to come to each other’s aid in times of crisis, and WWII provides plenty of trouble for these diehard twenty-somethings to work through. Abounding Hope, Book 1 in the series, is a friends-to-lovers romance, and Unending Hope is a second-chance romance. The novels are sequential to the timeline of WWII.

As well as struggling to safely navigate their responsibilities, the major characters in both novels seek answers to their needs and problems, which can only be found by embarking on a spiritual journey that’s just as climactic as their physical adventures.

I love to research and dig up true stories I’ve never heard about or seen before and then share the most interesting ones through the lives of my characters. Bringing history to life is an adventure for me, and keeping my stories historically accurate is a goal I always strive to meet.

My Review

I enjoyed reading the first two books from J Taylor's The After series, The After and Survival. I wanted to find out what could happen next with Charlotte and Ann. I was honored to have the chance to read the third installment, The Invasion. Since this is part of a series, it would be best to read the series in order. A fabulous way to get away from the chaos of current events.

Spotlight and Giveaway: A Lesson in Love by Linda Shenton Matchett

About the Book

Book: A Lesson in Love

Author: Linda Shenton Matchett

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release Date: July 8, 2025

He thinks he’s too old. She thinks she’s too young. Can these teachers learn that love defies all boundaries?

Born and raised in London, Isobel Turvine knows nothing about farming, but after most of the students in her school evacuate during Operation Pied Piper, she’s left with little to do. Then her friend Margery talks her into joining the Women’s Land Army, and she finds herself working the land at a manor home in Yorkshire that’s been converted to a boys’ school. A teacher at heart, she is drawn to the lads, but the handsome yet stiff-necked headmaster wants her to stick to farming.

Left with an arm that barely works from the last “war to end all wars,” Gavin Emerson agrees to take on the job of headmaster when his school moves from London to Yorkshire, but he’s saddled with the quirky manor owner, bickering among his teachers, and a gaggle of Land Army girls who have turned the grounds into a farm. When the group’s blue-eyed, raven-haired leader nearly runs him down in a car, he admonishes her to stay in the fields, but they are thrown together at every turn. Can he trust her not to break his heart?

About the Author

Linda Shenton Matchett writes happily-ever-after historical Christian fiction about second chances and women who overcome life’s challenges to be better versions of themselves.

A native of Baltimore, Maryland, she was born a stone’s throw from Fort McHenry (of Star-Spangled Banner fame) and has lived in historical places all her life. She is a volunteer docent and archivist at the Wright Museum of WWII and a former trustee for her local public library. She now lives in central New Hampshire where she explores the history of this great state and immerses herself in the imaginary worlds created by other authors.

More from Linda

The Women’s Land Army was originally formed in 1917, during The Great War to help Britain with its food production. After the men returned home, the group was disbanded. Once again at war in 1939, the WLA was reestablished, and over the course of the conflict, more than 200,000 women served all over the United Kingdom. Many came from cities and towns and knew very little about working on a farm. Most had to be taught how to drive, milk cows, collect eggs, sow, and reap the harvest in addition to the many other tasks associated with farms.

Among the largest crops to be produced were potatoes. They were cheap, and several varieties matured quickly providing food to citizens, troops, and refugees. Rationing was a necessary part of wartime life to ensure everyone had enough to eat. The government issued pamphlets and cookbooks with easy-to-follow recipes made with readily available food (tinned and fresh).

Lord Woolton Pie, a vegetarian potpie named after the Minister of Food, is one of those recipes. By all reports it was not well-received, however, I’ve made it on several occasions and find it quite tasty.

Pie

1lb cauliflower
1lb rutabaga (I use parsnips)
1lb carrots
1lb potatoes
Bunch of spring onions chopped
2 teaspoons of Marmite (yeast extract – or you can use a stock cube)
Tablespoon of rolled oats
Salt and pepper to taste once cooked.
Parsley (fresh or dried)

Pastry

8oz wholemeal/wholewheat flour
4oz mashed potato
3oz margarine or lard
2 tsp of baking powder
couple large pinches of salt
Dash of water if needed.

Procedure

  • Chop up the vegetables into chunks with those that take longest to cook into smaller pieces.
  • Place in pot and bring to simmer with just enough water to reach 3/4 of the way up the veg in the pot.
  • Add in Marmite and rolled oats, salt and pepper and cook until tender and most of the water has been absorbed.
  • Place mixture in deep pie dish and sprinkle with fresh parsley (or add dry parsley to mixture and mix in)
  • Make the pastry by mixing the flour with the baking powder and salt and then rubbing in the margarine.
  • Mix the mashed potato in to form a dough and knead (add a little water to the mixture if too dry)
  • Roll out to form pie crust and place on top and decorate then brush with milk.
  • Place in oven at 375 degrees for 30 minutes or so until top is form and browned.

Meet the Author:

Ten year old Dave Tabler decided he was going to read the ‘R’ volume from the family’s World Book Encyclopedia set over summer vacation. He never made it from beginning to end. He did, however, become interested in Norman Rockwell, rare-earth elements, and Run for the Roses.

Tabler’s father encouraged him to try his hand at taking pictures with the family camera. With visions of Rockwell dancing in his head, Tabler press-ganged his younger brother into wearing a straw hat and sitting next to a stream barefoot with a homemade fishing pole in his hand. The resulting image was terrible.

Dave Tabler went on to earn degrees in art history and photojournalism despite being told he needed a ‘Plan B.'

Fresh out of college, Tabler contributed the photography for “The Illustrated History of American Civil War Relics,” which taught him how to work with museum curators, collectors, and white cotton gloves. He met a man in the Shenandoah Valley who played the musical saw, a Knoxville fellow who specialized in collecting barbed wire, and Tom Dickey, brother of the man who wrote ‘Deliverance.’

In 2006 Tabler circled back to these earlier encounters with Appalachian culture as an idea for a blog. AppalachianHistory.net today reaches 375,000 readers a year.

Dave Tabler moved to Delaware in 2010 and became smitten with its rich past. He no longer copies Norman Rockwell, but his experience working with curators and collectors came in handy when he got the urge to photograph a love letter to Delaware’s early heritage. This may be the start of something.

My Review:

I have loved reading Dave Tabler's books on the history of Delaware. I was honored to once again to have a chance to read his newest release, Delaware at Christmas / The First State in a Merry State. I loved reading the different past and present traditions and customs practiced in the state of Delaware. The book is in four parts: Cultural Traditions, 19th Century Celebrations and Customs, The Victorian Era and Early 20th Century, and Modern Traditions. I loved seeing the pictures and photographs all throughout. It was interesting reading the different influences from the world, such as, Scandinavian, Dutch, British, German, African, Polish, Irish, Italian, and Hispanic. I learned about decorations, food, plants, and icons that I know today that is part of Christmas traditions. I thought it was a great book to read just as the Holiday season starts to kickoff.

Delaware at Christmas / The First State in a Merry State by Dave Tabler will be getting a very well deserved five plus stars from me. I highly recommend it for all readers who love to read non fiction that is rich in history, particularly United States of America. I believe it would make a wonderful gift for any history buff of any age. As always, I would love to read more books like this one from Dave Tabler in the future.

I received a paperback copy of Dave Tabler's Delaware at Christmas / The First State in a Merry State from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

My Review:

Peace of God Bible is a beautiful New King James Version Bible. Each book of the Bible starts off with a little history about who wrote it, when it was estimated written, key verses, and the theme of the book. I enjoyed the Peace Notes sections all throughout this Bible. The back of the study Bible, there is: Topical Index of Devotions, Features Index, NKJV Concise Concordance,, and colorful maps. I liked the soft cover that made it easy for me hold on to, the larger text, and the two ribbons included for book marking.
