70% of Americans Want To Be Their Own Boss

A recent Harris Poll indicated that 70% of American workers hope to someday own a business. Why do these hopes and dreams go unfulfilled? Why do most people never take even the first steps to explore this option in a serious way?

One of my first mentors used this corny expression, “stay off the hopium” many years ago when I proposed doing something tomorrow that needed to be done today. Today I find myself giving similar advice to many “wantrapreneur” clients -- albeit with different words.

The rationalizations vary but the basic theme is always the same -- the time isn’t right.

I’m too busy at work.

My kids have a soccer tournament.

I need to save more.

I need to start or finish some home projects.

The list only grow.

Clients hope that next month, next year, in 5 years things they will have more time. Life will be less demanding. That’s hopium.

They’re not fooling anyone - especially themselves. Next month, next year, or in 5 years there will be other challenges and probably less time.

Simply put, we only have this time. This time is the right time to start.

A smart approach is to start with small steps, but start today, start now. Is business ownership right for you? Maybe, maybe not. Take small steps to learn so you can make knowledge-based decisions.

Try this approach.  Define your goal in one sentence, i.e. "I want to learn about business ownership".

1) Commit two hours per week to learning about business ownership.

2)Evaluate. What have you learned about ownership? About yourself? Build on it.

3)Commit to another two hours for next week.

4)Evaluate.

5)Repeat.

It’s really that simple. Just start. Today. Now. My role is to provide no-cost guidance. I’m paid by the industry. Guiding others through a systematic research process is all I do. Message me through Linkedin or at Tfireman@frannet.com

I was smart enough to have written my own golden parachute when my company fell victim to a hostile takeover. they fired all execs and brought in their own team. I had a year's pay to invest in building my own human resource consulting business. That was 25 years ago and I've never looked back!

I love the fact that the US (and Australia) are places of aspiration and inspiration - it's odd to be back in the UK - it feels different. Love the tips.
