If you know you will re-read a book, then the book pays for itself.

This is one of those books.

Farnam Street blog atomizes and studies concepts under a microscope. This book zooms out to show many of those ideas combined together through a business biography.

Harvey Firestone, while not a perfect man, struggled with many of the same issues business owners and operators deal with today, including: hiring people that think clearly, delegation, balancing the details of the business with thought and actions for the future, stomping bureaucracy, developing functional literacy of the technical aspects of a business as a non-technical individual, fundraising, employee incentives, legal battles, etc…

The wisest people learn from the mistakes and successes of others. Seeing how another individual dealt with these timeless problems will help you solve the same problems.

Great book, is has so many gems on it. Thinkers and doers like Mr. Harvey Firestone made America great. I hope that the current generations don’t destroy this. When his business suffered the economic crisis in 1920 he discovered that his sales department had become complacent and his solution to the challenge was admirable. He thought for himself. He cared for his people. He saw nothing as impossible. When the situation required him to change he did it. He always procured to have money in cash to be well positioned to challenges and opportunities. This is a book worth reading. It has a lot of lessons.

This book was an easy and enjoyable read. Hearing the stories from Mr Firestone about the tire industry, his businesses, and the travels with Mr Ford and Edison was interesting. Fun to see the perspective from about a hundred years ago.
