The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Keeping Your Sh*t Together: How to Run Your Business Without Letting it Run You Paperback – January 24, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
You run a business. And running a business is hard. It can ruin your health. It can ruin your relationships. It can ruin your life. But only if you don’t equip yourself for the journey. The responsibility, stress and loneliness of being an entrepreneur are a far cry from your friends who work salaried jobs. The path of least resistance is to let the stress and isolation of starting, running and growing a business infiltrate most aspects of your life.
Over and over we’ve watched our fellow entrepreneurs succumb to the mental toll and chaos of running a business. We’ve also experienced it firsthand as we’ve launched and grown our own businesses.
Odds are good that you’ve been overwhelmed at some point. Maybe you’ve read self help books only to find that books about stress management typically don’t take into account the unique experience of entrepreneurs. Or they’re ‘lifehacks’ written by a blogger with no formal training, offering advice based on anecdotes.
Why do I need this book?
- You want to invest in yourself (and consequently, your business).
- You want to learn proven strategies, tactics and techniques to overcome the challenges that cause you heartburn and headaches.
- You want to get off the treadmill of stress, anxiety and isolation that entrepreneurship brings.
- You want to prevent burnout, depression, isolation, and the emergence of damaging coping strategies and self-sabotaging choices.
Author, Seth Godin calls it, "A personal, generous and incredibly useful guide to staying sane and changing the world at the same time. Read it before you think you need it".
Here are just a few things you will take away:
- New ways to deal with the responsibility and fear that go along with being an entrepreneur
- Why knowing yourself and where you came from is crucial to your success
- How to succeed as an entrepreneur no matter your personality type
- How to keep stress from ruining your relationships
- Dealing with depression, anxiety, burnout, ADHD and other common psychological burdens
- How to get more things done – and faster – by dealing with procrastination, distraction and muddled priorities
- How to deal with overwhelming (seemingly) massive failures
- How to find personal calm in the midst of chaos
- And much more...

- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2018I've been a freelancer and entrepreneur for 30 years, so I can honestly say that it's an immensely rewarding lifestyle. But it's equally challenging, loaded with stress, anxiety, and even loneliness at times. And it demands your constant attention, often competing for time with your family and other relationships, let alone making time for yourself... your health, sanity, and overall well-being. Whether you’ve been at this a while, or are just at the beginning of your entrepreneurial journey, one can quickly lose sight of why you became an entrepreneur in the first place.
But it IS possible to do the best, most meaningful work of your life... while still fully enjoying your life at the same time.
This book is packed with practical tools and deeply personal stories from entrepreneurs just like you who've been where you are, having experienced the same anxieties, fears, failures and frustrations... and now can share how to avoid those same pitfalls so you can enjoy more joy, freedom, creativity, and meaning in both your work and your personal life. You'll want to read this one with a journal or notebook handy, so you can put these practical lessons to work in your own life.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2018With all the things going on in your business, the easiest thing to overlook is also the most important: yourself. Whether you've already taken the plunge or are still considering it, this book lets you put your jumble of thoughts into a context that actually makes sense. You'll also find actionable steps you can take to protect your mental and emotional health as you take on the challenges ahead.
I think what makes this book resonate more than others I've read is that it's not solely based on aggregated research of anonymous people. It's heavily augmented with real-world experience from the author and personal interviews from entrepreneurs whom you can identify with. From one brutally honest story to the next, you'll quickly realize that the problems you face are very similar to the ones faced by everyone else.
You'll find yourself coming back to it again and again as you face those inner demons which seem to inevitably rise up when you least expect it.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2018This is one of those books that I wish was available years ago, as it would've helped me understand much more about myself and my journey. Instead I had to cobble together pieces of this from a variety sources: other books, my therapist, friends and mentors.
Sherry's book is most helpful in the way that it is clear that she has spent a lot of time around entrepreneurs and is an entrepreneur herself. From the language to validate the challenges of entrepreneurship to the tips/tricks/tactics to coping, this will resonate with all entrepreneurs.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2018I love the raw honesty and lessons of this book. As an entrepreneur and a full-time digital nomad myself I know that both these realms have are filled with guru's telling lemmings to "jump in the water is fine". The truth is though that the water can be rough and you should be prepared to deal with it or you're drowning. This book tells so many stories that everyone can derive lessons from. You come away with a whole lot of tools to deal with procrastination, burn out and the massive personal and professional life disruptions that get thrown at you. I wish I'd read it 10 years ago, although I still learned a lot to handle the next 10 years.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2020I can't recommend this book highly enough. The quote above says it all. Entrepreneurship has the capacity to pull from within you capacities that you never realize you have, but have always gnawed at you - wanting to be unleashed... yet it also tends to cause such mental, emotional and spiritual upheaval in the process that you need a guide along the way. This book and the journey that Sherry and Rob have gone on can be that guide for navigating this existential reorganization - and helping to build a bridge for the people around you who love you and are often at a loss trying to understand what's happening in your world. Thank you both for bringing this work to the world!

- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2023This book has made me feel seen at a time where i feel like I'm near a breaking point in my life. This book has been like fresh air after being submerged underwater for yrs for me. Thank u for sharing your gift, & the struggles that come with it. U have helped me realize that I'm experiencing something that's normal for entrepreneurs. It always feels great to know someone understands how u feel & you've managed to do that, & so much more for me, with this book. I have recommended to a couple of ppl so far already. Thank u, & continue to be a blessing to the world.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2018For someone who's worked at a few failed startups, I know exactly what Sherry is talking about in each one of these pages. How it's just too easy to jump in and then 1 year later find out you no longer have a job, and oh yea, your friends have abandoned you because you essentially excommunicated them while you were dealing with your "higher calling."
Some advice I've seen and even implemented myself before but there are some new things in here to consider. Lots of emphasis on how your mental state can affect the performance in your work. Overall, if you're working on the best entrepreneur (or someday to-be entrepreneur) this is a great resource to navigate the daily battles that you may encounter.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2025This book was just ok. There really wasn't a lot covered that anyone thinking/trying to start a business probably hasn't already seen before. I found myself skipping huge portions that were just basic common sense.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is fantastic!
Wow, I'm not even done and this is a good in depth book about getting to know oneself and keeping it all together. You won't be disappointed. It's packed with info and things that make you go, huh. It's not what I expected at all. It's like having a counselor in your pocket...if it's a big pocket...you know, because the book is too big for a pocket. Get it, you won't be sorry. I paid for this book and I do not know the author, but kudos to them.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much fluff
I bought this book because I highly respect Rob and find a lot of value in his publications. In particular, "Start Small, Stay Small" was fantastic. Unfortunately, this book by his wife is a complete waste of time and money.
As a bootstrapper with a technical background, I find the book is full of meaningless "fluff". Phrases like "live in the moment" are great advice but so meaningless by now that putting them into another book is an utter waste of time and space. I also really don't like the excessive use of lists throughout the book to explain topics. The pattern
"This issue can be broken down into A, B, C. I will tell you about them now."
"A) ..."
"B)..."
"C)..."
gets boring very quickly. It feels like Sherry had some topics in mind, then sat down and brainstormed "Okay, what I can I say about this topic? A, B and C. So I'll write a little about A, then a little about B, and then about C". It would have made for much better reading if she had simply given one well-rounded and more concise treatment of the topic.
I normally don't write reviews on Amazon. However, in this case, I feel the value I've obtained from this book is negative. I'm disappointed that Rob announced the book as (basically) his next big thing after Drip. It is true that the topic is highly important. Unfortunately, the book doesn't do it justice.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book that every founder & business owner needs to read
This is a book that *every* founder, business owner and their significant-other needs to read. Possibly more than once. I wish this book had been written years ago. The sections on "chaos vs rigidity" and "de-stinking your thinking" were pretty much written for me! And they've started to change how I view some pretty fundamental aspects of how I work already. The detail and practical advice on stress is absolutely invaluable too.
Don't assume this is just another collection of regurgitated "the world is your oyster" type of nonsense. This is the real thing.
It's also one of the few (maybe even the only) "business books" I've ever read that couldn't just be summed up into 3-4 pages. This is quality, worth reading in full, and might even safe a person's life one day. If you run your own business, you need this book right now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written east read that will help balance your life.
An easy to read “how to keep you balance” as an Entrepreneur. Well written book that that covers a wide array of topic that we tackle every single day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading of a taboo topic
Essential reading for any entrepreneur / solopreneur. A very under explored topic in this field (almost taboo) but really really important. I’ve seen depression get the better of some and they lost pretty much everything in quite a short space of time. “This will never happen to me” is a mistake waiting to happen. At the end of the day, if your personal life and health is being hit by the business then there’s no point running it. Being honest with yourself and pre-optimising for this otherwise inevitable eventuality will give you the best chance of avoiding a similar fate. Exploring the ideas and tactics in this book will give you the tools needed to keep it all together and run a successful business, and a successful personal life.
