Readers Deserve a Reward

I may be unusual, or just plain weird, but thinking of my ending first is the common way I approach a new story. It seems to help me to know my destination before I set out on the adventure of writing a story. I can take any number of routes to reach my destination and wandering around and exploring detours is a lot of the fun of writing. But by keeping my destination in mind, I don’t get lost. Or at least, not easily.

The other thing I keep in mind about my ending is that it’s a reward for the reader. I’m relatively new to publishing and not well known. So when readers take a chance on one of my stories, I believe it’s my job to reward their risk with an atypical, satisfying ending. Now I do work hard to make the whole story satisfying with things like an attention-grabbing opening and tension-building scenes. But endings, I think, are special to readers. This is the part that lingers in their minds when they close the book–whether it’s a sense of satisfaction, like the pleased feeling you have after a delicious meal, or anger or exasperation because the ending let them down.

I work to make all parts of the ending satisfying–the climax, denouement or wrap-up, and the last lines. For the climax, readers of my mysteries deserve more thant just the good guys solving the puzzle and catching the bad guy. I plan an action-packed, suspenseful climax that has readers living the final confrontation with the main character and it resolves itself in a way that, I hope, surprises readers.

Denouements are so critical to mysteries, when the detective explains how he solved the case. But they can also be deadly dull because the explanation needs to be thorough to meet the expectations of mystery fans. So in A Storm of Doubts, I split up the explanation–a lot of it is revealed during the climax, so I don’t bore readers by piling up a discussion of the solution in one chapter.

The final scene and last lines are areas I spend a good deal of thought on. Even if this scene was my inspiration for the entire story, how it plays in my head and how it plays on the page are two very different things. I also think the last scene and lines have a certain rhythm to them, like the final bars of a song. My job is make the scene round off the story without staying too long in it.

So when you read A Storm of Doubts, I’d love to know what you think of the ending. Because you do deserve a reward.

Author Interview

Which author has most influenced your own writing?

Wow, that’s a tough one. I can’t choose just one, so I’ll give you several. Agatha Christie and Edward D. Hoch are a huge influence on how I plot. Rex Stout on developing a strong main character with a strong, unique voice. P.G. Wodehouse and Patrick McManus on humor. P.G. Wodehouse and C.S. Lewis on creating effective similies and metaphors. Melville Davisson Post and G.K. Chesterton on how to describe settings that come alive in readers’ minds.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

Since I still have kids in school and work from home, it’s hard to establish a concrete schedule. No two days are alike. So I’ve learned to write wherever I have to be. I’ve gotten a lot written, waiting in doctors’ offices. I’ve written on the sidelines of a soccer game and in my car while waiting for soccer practice to end. I’ve written during numerous car drives. I even worked on a short story while sitting on a bench outside a junior high while waiting for my oldest to finish with the marching band one Friday night.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I’m a bit of both. I usually think of my climax first. I need to have a goal to write toward. Then I’ll do some basic outlining of the beginning chapters. When I start to write, though, the outline may go out the window as I discover better plot points.

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

I prefer traditional books. I work so much on the computer that I need a break from the screen when I read for enjoyment. And I just love holding and owning physical books.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Write what you love to read. And you have to be a reader to be a writer. If someone tells me they are writing a mystery, but rarely read them, then I know that person doesn’t understand what readers expect in a mystery. If you write what you love to read, you’ll know what readers want in a book, and you’ll love what you write. And be sure to have fun writing. All the advice on the writing craft and how to get published can suck the joy from this art. Don’t forget to have fun!

There and Back Again: A Game?

The transition from book to game and back again is no easy thing. I’ve been on a steep learning curve since the day I started writing Wolf Soldier, the first book in the Lightraider Academy trilogy. Lion Warrior is the third.

I should walk back a step. Lightraiders is a game. Did you know that? It began as DragonRaid, a 1980s fantasy adventure game designed for teaching Biblical learning and discipleship. DragonRaid had a huge influence on my Christian walk in my teens. I now have the honor of carrying the concepts designed by the game’s original creator, Dick Wulf, to a new generation through games and stories. Before he went on to be with the Lord, Dick was kind enough to write a foreword for Wolf Soldier.

The task, when it came to me, was monumental: take a highly allegorical game with isolated location details and expand it into a full-realm book series while also building a new version of the game designed for today’s teens and families. By His grace, God placed men and women in my path who came alongside me to help—fellow believers who are creators from the realms of Tolkien, Star Wars, DC Comics, and Disney. Without them, it could not have been done.

We’ve been building the game in the background for three years. At the same time, the books have served as a transition from the old to the new. Lion Warrior completes that transition, and the book and the new Lightraiders Adventure Bible System game for teens will release almost simultaneously.

If you read through the series starting with Wolf Soldier, you may get a feel for this transition. The first book is more allegorical and tightly focused, much like the original DragonRaid game. Fantasy terms used in that story draw from the original game, with only a few new terms introduced. Bear Knight begins to broaden that perspective. It stretches past allegory and introduces several new ideas that you’ll find in the new Lightraiders game. In Lion Warrior, my hope is that you’ll finally have a picture of the fully developed realm from the Liberated Land in the south to the frozen islands in the far north of the Dragon Lands. And that story is fully steeped in the new game with terms and game mechanics slipped in for astute readers to find.

So, we’ve come full circle. DragonRaid became the story world in Wolf Solder. Then, as I and the team God sent to me rebuilt the game for a new generation, new elements found their way into Bear Knight. And now we have Lion Warrior, fully based on the new Lightraiders discipleship game. If you read the full trilogy and check out the game, I hope you’ll see it all growing together.

A number of years ago, I walked into a hospital room to visit a young woman I knew whose daughter with semi-lobar holoproscencephaly had been admitted. When I laid my eyes on the beautiful, tiny baby I knew that sweet girl had touched many lives, probably without her mother even knowing. The seed for a story was planted. I’d never written a book before so I ignored it for a long time, but then I witnessed an isolated teen in the school my children went to and that seed of an idea blossomed. Soon, the idea of a baby changing the life of a troubled teen would not leave me alone. And because I believe every book is better with romance, that baby might just have to touch a few other lives 😉 I took writing classes and penned this story over and over until it was right. And now I hand baby Theo to you, and pray he touches your life as well.

Author Interview

Which author has most influenced your own writing?

I would definitely say Karen Kingsbury. It was her books that drew me to writing Christian fiction and I love the way she weaves romance among such powerful storylines. I’ve even attended a writing intensive she hosted to learn more from her personally!

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Plantster 🙂 I cannot sit down with no plan in mind. I find I have to be able to envision the story start and the apex, and have a rough idea of at least one way the plot could get me to that “high point.” But as the characters grow and start to take over the story I like to give them room to navigate… so long as they can get me to that apex I envisioned, I’ll allow it.

Describe your book in five words.

The purpose of a life.

Which one of your characters speaks most to your heart? Why?

In Emma’s Hero, Mason will always have a soft spot in my heart. Some characters just walk on the page, fully developed and ready to tell their story, and he was one of them. I feel like so many of us can relate to feeling invisible and needing a purpose and how transforming it can be when you finally find your way.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Do not get discouraged. The very thing you might be rejected for today, will be the thing sought after tomorrow. Write what you feel called to write, develop some tough skin, but never forget to love it. Have fun and tell your story.

危机 is an interesting character.

It means crisis in Mandarin. The first character, 危 or wei, symbolizes “dangerous.” The second, 機 or ji, means “opportunity.” Put those two words together and you have the Chinese word for crisis.

I learned about the breakdown of this character while I was living in Beijing and starting to write the Hybrid Series. It felt risky moving to Beijing to work in an all-Chinese office using my second language, taking on a completely new role, while in the middle of a serious relationship, and with zero friends or community there to support me.

When my health failed, my long-distance relationship wavered, and the program that sent me dissolved leaving me without a job or visa, I arrived at a crisis.

If you look at the Chinese character for crisis, there’s two ways of thinking about interpreting it. One, a crisis is something dangerous, to be feared, and to run away from. Or two, a crisis could be an opportunity.

The crisis I faced in Beijing led to some incredible things in my life.

Because of it, I ended up writing the Hybrid Series and getting published. My relationship (with my now husband) became stronger. I grew on a personal level in so many ways. My dependence on God deepened as well.

My time in Beijing was one you could not pay me to relive. It’s also a season I wouldn’t trade for the world.

I once heard someone say:

“Do what scares you most.”

Maybe if what you’re chasing after doesn’t scare you, you’re not reaching high enough.

Seeing a crisis as an opportunity involves a great deal of risk. It’s a scary thing. If I avoided the things that scared me, I never would have gone to graduate school, taken half the roles I did in my career, moved overseas, dated, gotten married, learned Krav Maga, given birth, signed a book deal, and many other things that ended up being some of the best experiences in my life.

It’s all a matter of perspective.

In Hybrid, the main character, Lee Urban, faces a crisis in her life.

When Urban risks everything to seek out answers about her birth origins, she finds more than she bargained for and danger ensues. At her darkest moment of despair, she sees the characters weiji, or crisis, for what they could be: a dangerous opportunity. That discovery changes everything for her.

That same discovery changed me.

At some point in our lives, we will all face a crisis. The question is, will we let the fear of danger cow us into taking the path of least resistance? Or will we be true to ourselves, take calculated risks, and pursue the things we know God made us for?

For me, I’m choosing the latter.

My Favorite Place on Earth

Do you have a favorite place other than your home? Ever since I was a preteen of eleven, I have gravitated to my favorite spot. I chose it as the setting for Whispers of Wisdom.

Château de Chenonceau in Chenonceaux, France, sprawls across the River Cher in the Loire Valley.

As a child I faced this elegant petit château with wide eyes and a budding imagination. Iran up the long avenue lined with plane trees toward the columns with huge statues of lions, guarding the courtyard and entrance to the castle.

My sisters and I skipped, jumped, and played in and through the two manicured gardens, catching glimpses of the château mirrored in the river, revealing some of the magical secrets in the water. My young mind conjured up princesses escaping the castle’s confines, wandering the paths among the flowers and shrubs.

The ancient wooden doors opened to a fairy tale world of kings and queens. Tapestries, tiled floors, ornate furniture, flower arrangements, paintings, and stories of past grandeur. My favorite rooms were the kitchens and the gallery over the river with the black and white tiles floors. We skipped and danced from one end to the other. As I left the enchanted château, I promised to return.

Claiming a place as a favorite that is across an ocean, probably was not the best choice, but the château’s imprint remained strong. When I studied in France, I placed Château Chenonceau as a must see. I noticed my imagination and fascination had not dissipated. I’ve returned many times. My adult self enters into the fantasy world with a twirl or two on the checkered floors and a skip and a jump in the gardens.

I hope you catch some of the historical thrill of this little castle in the pages of Whispers of Wisdom.

Author Interview

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

After three months of research, I settle in to a writing schedule that includes a few hours a day during my work day. I am an online French and Spanish teacher so I have to carve out a daily time. I try to have two hours a day to write.

Which one of your characters speaks most to your heart? Why?

Nicole is a young character who lives on the grounds of a castle tending the gardens and helping in the castle. I would love to live in a cottage close to a small village and the castle. She has dreams and artistic skills. Give me a garden, some books, and a small cottage in France, and I’ll be just fine.

What are your hobbies?

I am an avid reader who loves to garden, walk, travel, and spend time with friends and family.

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

My preference will always be print books. But I read ebooks and have audiobooks ready!

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Write, write, write! Even if you are never published, you can still write. At some point, when the writer is ready, treat the writing process as a job. Set aside time in a schedule and stick to it.

Behind the Scenes

This novel might never have been born had I not seen an interview on PBS with two New York Times writers, Megan Twohey and Gabriel Dance, on December 16, 2021.

These reporters did an extensive investigation into a website on which subscribers discussed committing suicide and shared methods for doing so. Most visitors to the site were thirty or younger. There were 1.2 million messages. At least forty-five suicides in multiple countries were linked to the site.

At the time of this broadcast, I had just completed my second novel, The Seven-Day Resurrection, and was wondering what to do next. The PBS interview was so shocking that I could not stop thinking about it. What motive could a person have for encouraging strangers to kill themselves? What could one possibly gain from such an endeavor? And what could provoke someone to throw away the gift of life at such a youthful age?

Each of my novels has been the result of an inspiration from God. Once He puts an idea into my head, it consumes my imagination until I cannot stop working. As you might imagine from the title, The Samaritan’s Patient is a blend of two stories: the famous parable of Jesus in the Bible, and a young person with good intentions who gets caught up in a social media nightmare.

God did all the work on this book. He created the character of Paige Abernathy and told me how to build the novel around the circumstances of her personal life—her parents, her friends, and most of all, her Christian faith. He also created the crisis that launches her on a journey of new experiences and personal growth.

I am amazed and grateful that God would choose someone so ordinary and unaccomplished as myself to do this work. Each novel God has written through me has been a great personal gift, and a reaffirmation that God has a plan for each of us. I pray that The Samaritan’s Patient will be as great a blessing to its readers as it has been to me.

Author Interview

When/how did you decide to become a writer?

I have never considered myself a writer, although I have some minor business writing experience. I chose the pen name Chevron Ross to make sure no one knows who I am, so that God gets all the credit for the novels He writes through me.

Which one of your characters speaks most to your heart? Why?

Strangely, the one I still think about most is Norris Tankersley, the man who tries to break into the hospital emergency room. Although he’s nothing like me, his personal journey from darkness to light is so moving.

Who was/is your biggest inspiration?

Any good that I have done has resulted from God’s inspiration. The books written under the Chevron Ross name are all His ideas. I feel I’ve become a better person in the seven years since He chose me for this literary mission.

Do you prefer traditional books, eBooks, or audiobooks?

You can’t beat the simplicity of a bound-paper book. You don’t have to plug it in, boot it up, or get it repaired when it winks out. Besides, I love being surrounded by shelves full of books. It’s like being wrapped in a warm blanket.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse, or is there a particular Bible story that really resonates with you?

Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan, which figures largely in The Samaritan’s Patient, is my favorite part of the Bible. It comforts me to know that God understands my flaws and weaknesses, that He loves me anyway, and that He’s always willing to take me back.

A few years ago, I decided to write a series since readers enjoy reading stories with familiar characters. Four siblings came to mind, perhaps because I have four children, and the Daniels family from Charlotte, North Carolina, burst onto my computer screen.

I’ve loved spending time with Ben, Heath, Sam, and Josie for the past several years and sharing how three of them found their happily ever after. One, however, always appeared on the fringe of the story, participating, yes, but always a bit set apart from the family.

Heath Daniels is the second oldest sibling, the middle brother between Ben and Sam. Readers will discover him first in Forever Music and then in a larger role in Forever Home, but he never disclosed too much about himself in those stories.

Before I began the series, I didn’t know to plan key plot points and goals for each story as well as the whole series. As a panster, I wrote each story as it came to me or as I needed to like, for instance, the novella, “A Hatteras Surprise.”

When it came time to write Heath’s story, I hardly knew him. I wasn’t sure about his backstory, his occupation, tastes…nothing. He grudgingly released those missing pieces bit by tiny bit.

At the beginning of Forever Free, Heath feels like the black sheep in the family. In the high achieving Daniels clan, he’s the one who dropped out of college, the one who struggled with substance abuse, the one who feels less than. With all his siblings coupling up, he’s staring at a single future because of old misguided beliefs.

Guilt from an early tragedy along with bad choices play important parts in Heath’s personality. Phoebe Sinclair has her hands full nurturing her cut flower farm, plus she has to deal with a cute, but distant employee, the mysterious Heath.

I enjoyed getting to know Heath and watching his growth from the sullen, misunderstood character to the confident businessperson who wants Phoebe to achieve her dream. I hope you’ll enjoy his story, too.

Here’s a recipe Phoebe bakes for her grandfather in Forever Free. I’m not sure why it’s called Swedish Nut Cake, but I’m sure it’s delicious.

Swedish Nut Cake

Ingredients for cake: Ingredients for icing:
2 C flour 1 8 oz pkg creamed cheese
1 ¾ C sugar 1/2 stick butter
2 eggs 1 t vanilla
2 t baking soda 1 ½ C powdered sugar, sifted
1 t vanilla
½ chopped nuts
1 20 oz. can crushed pineapple with juice

Directions:
Mix all ingredients for cake and bake in a greased 9×13 pan at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes. For icing, mix all ingredients and frost the cooled cake. Store in the refrigerator.

Author Interview

Do you ever hide things in your stories for readers to find?

Yes, using snippets of stories or names that only people who know me well will recognize amuses me. For example, our twin boys are Lane and Quinn. In Irish Encounter, I named a street Quinn Lane. I saw a real street with that name when we visited Lane in Clarksville, TN. I hid a lot of things in Irish Encounter because it was my first novel, and I thought I was writing it only for my eyes.

What are your hobbies?

I like to cook, especially bake. I love to read and play the piano. I love crocheting, and I crochet with a group of dear friends at church every week. I love writing and receiving real mail.

What is your favorite book?

Jane Eyre! It’s such a wonderful story of persevering, of sticking to your morals even when it’d be so easy to grab what your heart longs for. Readers see Jane’s strength and confidence grow in the face of adversity throughout the novel.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse, or is there a particular Bible story that really resonates with you?

One of my favorites is Ephesians 3:20. “[God] is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.” No matter what we can come up with, God can do more, can give more. God is more. I love that.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Read, read, read in your genre and writing craft books. Write every day. Connect with other writers. Ask for real critiques from people other than friends and family. Pray, pray, pray for guidance.

It all started one day when I learned that the Gospel of John was published fifty years after Jesus died. Fifty years! What did John do all that time? Where did he live? Why did he wait?

But wait, there’s more. On the Cross, Jesus placed his own mother under John’s protection. How long did John take care of her? Where did they live?

I think you can tell I got a little obsessive about this man, who outlived all the others to become the last disciple.

In fact, that very phrase, the last disciple, came to me early one morning when I was reading about John and Peter going to Samaria in Acts 8. John lived so long that he outlived all the others and became the last disciple.

The Youngest Disciple

What do we know about John? He walked with Jesus when he was very young, probably a teenager or very early 20s. He and Andrew were the first disciples of Christ. Before that, they both followed John the Baptist.

Anyone who reads the New Testament would know John as:

The son of Zebedee, his father, and Salome, his mother
Brother to the disciple James
A fisherman on the Sea of Galilee
He and his brother James were friends and even fishing buddies with Peter and his brother Andrew
Youngest of the 12 disciples.
Author of five books of the Bible:
- The Gospel of John 80-90 AD
- The Letters or Epistles of John 90-95 AD
- The Book of Revelation 95-98 AD

But after the mention in Acts 8, that’s it for John. Radio silence for nearly 50 years. Why did it take him so long to write the Gospel of John? And that is the very question I seek to answer in The Last Disciple Series.

John. I’m a bit obsessed with him. I’ve been writing about and thinking about him for years.

Do you ever hide things in your stories for readers to find?

I don’t hide things, but I don’t always spell out the historical or Biblical significance of an incident.

What is your favorite book?

The Bible

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

I like both. Most of my reading is in ebooks. But I have lots of research books in hardcover or paperback.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse, or is there a particular Bible story that really resonates with you?

Author Interview

When/how did you decide to become a writer?

Lisa: I truly didn’t ever imagine co-authoring a book! I have been a wordy book girl all my life. I love vocabulary and spelling. I began doing freelance articles, and in that process writing just started to make sense. Amber pulled me into doing magazine articles and the next thing I knew we were on this adventure together. It’s been a huge blessing.

Amber: Despite my career in the magazine world, becoming an author wasn’t a lifelong dream. However, a strategic moment guided by God prompted me to share my perspective and that of over 30 women through the book “Leading Ladies.” It became a transformative opportunity to alter self-perception.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Amber: My writing process is akin to throwing words down like baboons in a room full of paint. I intentionally refrain from editing in the initial stages, choosing instead to shape the content later. Collaboration is crucial, and I frequently invite others to contribute, molding the narrative. I’ve playfully coined my distinct writing style as “Amberisms,” an inside joke that, unfortunately, many people outside my brain struggle to grasp the brilliance of, leading to their untimely demise in the editing process.

Lisa: I have a tendency to edit as I write, like, from the start. So I’m in a constant state of honing in on the writing from the very start. I circle around each phrase until it’s in a fairly final form. While our writing styles were different, I feel like I learned so much from Amber and we ended up with a great project.

What drew you to the time period that you write about?

Lisa: Because the book was the result of a God prompted moment, Amber had the vision from the beginning to include multiple current voices. Right now was the perfect time.

Describe your book in five words.

Lisa: Inspirational, Raw, Intriguing, Motivational and interaction

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

Lisa: I’m involved in several things outside of writing, so I have to really schedule. I find that if I don’t set aside specific time to do it, it gets delayed and I start to feel pressured.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I am truly both, and I write about that in my personal chapter in the Leading Ladies book! Since childhood I have done well with checking off a list and keeping things in orderly fashion, however…I am creative at heart, so I do have moments of sheer unplanned spontaneity. The pull between the two caused me much stress growing up. As an adult I’ve been able to rest in the fact that our creator does all things well. I don’t necessarily have to be either this way or that way. Our Father can work with either/or and BOTH.

Do you have a favorite or special place to write?

Lisa: I do appreciate uninterrupted solitude and a big comfy chair.

What are your hobbies?

Lisa: I’m a crafty girl so I’m always making or revamping something! Right now I’m loom knitting scarves and hats for my GrandBabes. I love spending time with my family and travel.

What is your favorite book?

Lisa: To Kill A Mockingbird/Harper Lee

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

Lisa: I like traditional books. The feel of them in my hands and the turn of the pages help me to settle in. But I also love the ease of a digital copy you can pull up on your device with ease.

Amber: As a writer and reader, I actually prefer audiobooks. It allows me to multitask, especially when driving, and enhances my overall retention.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse, or is there a particular Bible story that really resonates with you?

Amber: My favorite Bible verse is Romans 4:17-18. It resonates with the theme of our book, highlighting Abraham’s trust in God’s ability to bring life from death and create something out of nothing. It reflects the message of hope and faith that I aim to convey.

Is there a particular literary period that you’re drawn to (Regency, Victorian, Romantic, Modernism, etc.)? Why?

Lisa: My personal favorite genre is historical fiction so I’m prone to anything of the Modernist and Victorian literary period. It’s a wonderful way to place yourself in a different time period and get lost in someone else’s story. I treat it like a get-away, or a bit of self-care.

If you could meet one author, living or passed, who would it be?

Lisa: Maya Angelou…What she lived through, her ability to overcome and move on, leaving us with such eloquent yet raw writings…I have been profoundly moved by her.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Amber: In writing, there are no “Golden Calves.” Never stop learning the craft, keep growing, and continue writing only if it’s for an audience of one. The key is to persevere and maintain a genuine passion for the art of storytelling.
