How I built my best twitter thread and earned 100,000+ views

I'd been hearing some twitter friends talk about the power of threads but didn't really believe them. I even tried a couple of mine but didn't have much luck.

Earlier this week, I read an inspiring article from Sahil Bloom and decided to try summarizing my favourite points into a 20 tweet thread. I thought it'd be way too long, no one would care and it'd get looked over, but I was wrong.

Here's exactly what I did:

  1. I took the article and summarized it into 20 tweets.
  2. I made a nice intro tweet and exit tweet to ensure Sahil was given credit
  3. I spent no longer than 10 minutes putting everything together
  4. After I posted, I DM'd Sahil as we'd messaged before

Here's how people responded:

  1. Sahil liked and commented on the post within minutes
  2. The thread blew up within the hour and was being shared and RT'd
  3. Got a couple DMs and comments about it
  4. I pinned the tweet for more exposure.

The thread ended up getting over 100,000 impressions, 271 likes and 52 RTs.

I wanted to share this as an easy template anyone can use to test out threads.

Key takeaways for me:

  • Find someone's content you like
  • Try to break it down and key bite sized points
  • Send them a note letting them know you posted it
  • Test, reflect and see how everything works

Don't over think trying a thread. Test this out and let me know what works for you.

Any other advice / thoughts / opinions from other twitter wizards on indiehackers?

Hi Joel, Thanks for sharing. How many new followers did you get from that? Thanks.

Close to 75, so not too much IMO

That's a decent number. It would be great to be able to do a couple of those threads a month.
