How to grow faster on Twitter without fancy tools?

Based on my experience growing my Twitter from 0 to 5K+ audience & building my SaaS business on Twitter, the limiting factors affecting Twitter growth are:

  • Not engaging on other people's tweets enough
  • A bad hook for your tweet

This applies to you specifically if you have an audience size between 0-2000 followers on Twitter

Why engage in other people's tweets?

You might have tried to post different types of tweets, info-packed threads, etc. But all those go unnoticed if you don't have an audience who'd love to engage in your posts.

To get people to engage with your post, they should first be able to recognize you or find your content relatable. People recognize & remember you when you make them feel valued. And the best way to do that is to add a meaningful comment under their tweet

Bonus points if there's humor in the reply. Here's one good reply which in itself got good traction

Tweet hook needs to grab the reader's attention

There's a plethora of content on your Twitter feed. So no matter how good your content is, if the first line of your tweet sucks, then people just scroll past it

I've noticed time & time again that my best-performing tweets of mine had a catchy hook.

The first line of your tweet (Hook) should have one of the following characteristics

  • Be personal - So frame it from a first-person perspective eg., "I failed 3 startups in a year"
  • Invoke curiosity eg., "I used to think building a business was easy"
  • Catch them with humor in the second line

Here's one of my best-performing tweet having both the humor element & invoking curiosity which made it go viral

I've explained all the frameworks I used, what worked & what didn't work for me during the period of 6-7 months in this Twitter Growth Guide with actionable insights.

Great guide Goutham, I remember reading your tweet a few months ago, and I found it hilarious. The plot twist is just perfect, because usually you'd see people flexing their MMR and startups on twitter.

      You're welcome, James 🙌

Yup absolutely there's so much that could be done!

I also find that identifying your niche and engaging with the top accounts in that field works well.

Yep it's better to maintain 2 separate Twitter lists, one containing people with follower count similar to ours and another list with follower count more than 10K+

    It's inspiring, thank's for sharing.

That's pretty much how I grew from 700 followers back in September 2022 to 2300 followers in the end of March 2023.

Be interesting (working on interesting things helps), be funny (I don't have to force that, I love humor and don't trust people who don't like that) and interact with others to get noticed.

This is perfectly summed up, Benjamin!

Nice information. Everyone wants to grow their twitter followers. I start writing something, then loose motivation, after a couples of days.

Is it because the results don't meet your expectations, Himanshu?

Sometimes you can try out open ended questions to see if it boosts your other content types

May be because early growth is the hardest, numbers come in very slowly or not at all. But I will try again with your information. Hopefully I can do it better now.

I couldn't agree more. I've personally experienced it myself, gaining around 800 followers in just a month by actively engaging with the community. I truly believe that this is the way you should grow your following, by providing value to others and contributing to the community.

Spot on, Sandra! Twitter is purely a social game. The more we add value to others, the better our growth would be :)

Very timely as I am currently starting my journey on Twitter. Curious as to your thought process on building up your following on your personal account instead of your product Twitter account. Are you able to drive sales and traffic for the product better using your personal account? TIA

    1. 1

      That's a great question!

It's much easier to grow with a personal account than a company's account

In fact growing a company account becomes easier when you have a personal brand

For me, I get consistent traffic from Twitter for my product from the link in bio and the bio description

Other option- build a Twitter bot? haha. Starting to do that but damn just when Twitter implements the $100/mo API access 👀

    1. 1

Twitter bots might not work that well as people wouldn't prefer to engage with a bot 😅

I completely agree with this statement. I have had personal experience with it on my website and was able to gain approximately 800 followers within a month by actively engaging with the community. In my opinion, the best way to grow your following is by adding value to others and actively participating in the community.
