This Is Strategy: Make Better Plans (Create a Strategy to Elevate Your Career, Community & Life - College Graduation Gift) Kindle Edition
From Seth Godin, one of the world's most influential business thinkers and bestselling author of This is Marketing, comes an essential guide to thinking strategically in a complex, ever-changing world.
"With his signature clarity and brevity, the marketing maven presents memorable, practical advice for making smarter plans." —Adam Grant, author of Think Again
In this unique and thought-provoking book, Godin shares insights on strategy through a series of powerful reflections and observations that will reshape how you approach problems, make decisions, and create change.
“Creating tomorrow by repeating yesterday is not a useful way forward.”
“Every strategy requires choice. And those choices often involve saying ‘no’ to things we could do, but won’t do.”
“It’s not easy to persuade someone to want what you want. It’s much more productive to find people who already want to go where you’d like to take them.”
This is Strategy is a modern classic that offers perspectives you'll find yourself returning to again and again. Rather than providing step-by-step formulas, Godin offers something more valuable: a new way of seeing and thinking about the challenges you face.
You’ll discover how to:
- Identify your "smallest viable audience" and make remarkable work they can't ignore
- Understand and influence the systems shaping our world
- Prioritize long-term thinking over instant gratification
- Make smart, purposeful choices that shape a better tomorrow
Who this book is for:
- Leaders who want to think more deeply about their impact
- Entrepreneurs tired of conventional business advice
- Change-makers seeking lasting transformation in their career and community
- Anyone feeling stuck in outdated systems and looking for a fresh perspective
Strategy turns our effort into impact. Your journey to better thinking starts here.

About the author

Seth Godin is the author of 20 international bestsellers that have been translated into over 38 languages, and have changed the way people think about marketing and work. For a long time, Unleashing the Ideavirus was the most popular ebook ever published, and Purple Cow is the bestselling marketing book of the decade.
He worked as a year as the volunteer founding editor of The Carbon Almanac, and his recent bestsellers also include The Practice and This is Marketing.
He's a recent inductee to the Marketing Hall of Fame, and also a member of the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame and (go figure), the Guerrilla Marketing Hall of Fame.
His book, Tribes, was a nationwide bestseller, appearing on the Amazon, New York Times, BusinessWeek and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists. It's about the most powerful form of marketing--leadership--and how anyone can now become a leader, creating movements that matter.
His book Linchpin came out in 2008 and was the fastest-selling book of his career. Linchpin challenges you to stand up, do work that matters and race to the top instead of the bottom. More than that, though, the book outlines a massive change in our economy, a fundamental shift in what it means to have a job.
In addition to his writing and speaking, Seth was founder and CEO of Squidoo.com,. His blog (find it by typing "seth" into Google) is the most popular marketing blog in the world. Before his work as a writer and blogger, Godin was Vice President of Direct Marketing at Yahoo!, a job he got after selling them his pioneering 1990s online startup, Yoyodyne.
He's known as a pioneer in online education, and was the founder of the altMBA.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2024In an era where AI and technological advances push us to move faster than ever, Seth Godin's "This Is Strategy" arrives with a crucial reminder: It doesn't matter how fast you're going if you're going in the wrong direction. This insight alone makes the book worth reading, but Godin offers so much more.
What sets this book apart is its nuanced understanding of systems and change.
Rather than pushing the typical "hustle harder" narrative, Godin helps readers see and work with the invisible systems that shape our results. His unconventional structure - numbered sections that facilitate ongoing conversations - reflects the book's core message: strategic thinking requires dialogue and perspective-sharing.
The book's strength lies in its approach to change and disruption. Using metaphors like surfing ("A useful skill in surfing is picking the right place and time to go surfing."), Godin shows how to spot and leverage opportunities when systems are disrupted. This is particularly valuable as we navigate the AI revolution - it's not about resisting change but understanding how to make it work for us rather than letting it use us.
Particularly valuable for:
- Leaders seeking to create meaningful change without burning out
- Entrepreneurs navigating technological disruption
- Anyone feeling pressured to "move faster" without clear direction
- Teams wanting to have better strategic conversations
The companion Strategy Deck (54 cards with 5 million possible combinations) adds a practical, interactive dimension to the strategic thinking process.
Most importantly, this book encourages us to pause and ask essential questions before accelerating: What change do we seek to make? Who are we serving? Are we pushing against the wrong things? In our AI-driven world, these questions matter more than ever.
This isn't just another business strategy book - it's a compass for navigating complexity while staying true to your purpose. Whether you're leading a team, running a business, or seeking to make an impact, "This Is Strategy" helps you ensure you're moving fast in the right direction.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2025This book is not laid out like typical books with chapters, but more like with problem sets. The points of the book are scattered throughout in an order that I’m still trying to figure out, but there are lots of real life examples of businesses that have both succeeded and failed. I’m almost halfway through the book and am loving this reading every day in the sauna to help me reflect on my own life strategies. This seems like a book I can go back to over and over for inspiration and to continuously review my own strategies working in systems. I only gave the book a four out of five due to the order of the points and the scattered topics. But it’s still a great read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2025I’ve read lots of books on Strategy, and I enjoyed this one a lot. It’s written in a non-conventional way for books in that category. That is, it’s not systematic, it’s structured around short chapters. But it’s clear that Seth has thought really deep about how to make change happen, how systems work, and what games are at play.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2025Seth Godin definitely got me thinking! I enjoyed the of type chapters, I read a few a day, and was always left with new thoughts on how to strategize for my business!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2024Let me start by saying that I love Seth Godin. His thinking and his writing. I’ve read pretty much all of his books and one of my favorite books is The Icarus Deception.
As soon as I heard that he was publishing a new book, I headed to Amazon and pre-ordered it. I waited two months for this book to be released.
Unfortunately, this books is just not good.
As another reviewer has commented, it’s a book composed of 250+ individuals thoughts and ideas without any clear logic or continuity. The book is way too abstract and disjointed.
I struggle just to read the first 60 “chapters”, hoping that at some point it would get better but by 72 I’ve had enough and called it quit.
I’m disappointed. I’ll go re-read The Icarus Deception to try to get my spirits back up!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2024I'm truly a fan of Seth and have been personally impacted by what I've read in other books. This one is different though. It's a large collection of musings, and it's honestly difficult to read more than one or two at a time and have any sort of reflection. It might have been better published as a daily reader or desk calendar than a book. Not that any one piece is bad, but the presentation isn't working for me. I'll muscle through because I hate not finishing a book, but nothing is really sticking.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2024I haven't read the book yet, I assume I'll love it, as I love everything Seth Godin does, hence the 5 stars.
The only reason I write this review is to give a heads up that my copy came with deckle edges, whis is very unconventional for a business book and not specified in the description. I have to admit I personally wasn't pleasantly surprised about it, but it wouldn't be fair to make this cosmetic detail affect the book star rating. But I still wanted to put this comment out there in case anyone is buying it as a gift, the deckle edges may come across as a defect.
If it is not supposed to have deckle edges please someone let me know! :-)

1.0 out of 5 stars Misleading title, and not like earlier works. Disappointing.
This is a long list of short thoughts that are hard to get through. His earlier works, e.g "This Is Marketing" or "Linchpin", are really good in my opinion, so I figured "This Is Strategy" would be similar. I was very disappointed to find out the reality.
