Metaverse: the embodied internet where users are inside of rather than just looking at

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, this month said it wants to build metaverse, a virtual environment where users can be present with people in digital spaces.

Facebook is building for creators, commerce, and the next computing platform, but the larger goal is to build metaverse.

“In addition to being the next generation of the internet, the metaverse is also going to be the next chapter for us as a company. In the coming years, I expect people will transition from seeing us primarily as a social media company to seeing us as a metaverse company, said Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook.

Zuckerberg believes metaverse will be the successor to the mobile internet, an embodied internet where users are inside of rather than just looking at.

This week, in Facebook’s earnings call, Zuckerberg said users will hang out, play games with friends, work, create, in metaverse. Basically, everything that people can do on the internet today as well as some things that don’t make sense on the internet today, like dancing.

Zuckerberg points out that the defining quality of the metaverse is presence – which is this feeling that users are really there with another person or in another place. The metaverse is the ultimate expression of social technology, he said.
