Let me start with saying… I LOVE Shopify but… 👇👇 I truly believe that their Shopify capital product is and will be part of the big reason for the demise of so many sub $10 million brands ❌ For 1 - did you know that just taking the loan is a clear violation of almost every bank covenant? Of course you don’t… You’re a merchant who has a cool product that people love… not a finance expert 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ But it only takes one click and then the vicious cycle starts (imagine getting half a million dollars with a click??) With rates that are close to criminal in Canada 🇨🇦 (not sure about the US) Here are my 4 main reasons I despise Shopify capital… 1.Cost of Financing: Although Shopify Capital provides quick access to funds, the cost can be higher compared to traditional loans. Merchant cash advances, for instance, may carry higher effective interest rates due to their fee structure, which could make them more expensive over time . 2.Repayment Tied to Sales: For merchant cash advances, repayment is a fixed percentage of daily sales. This means that during slower business periods, though payments are lower, they will continue until the full amount is repaid. This can extend the repayment period unpredictably if sales drop . 3. Potential for Debt Cycle: Easy access to funds and the ability to renew capital before fully paying off existing advances can potentially lead businesses into a cycle of debt if not managed carefully . 4. No Benefit from Early Repayment: Unlike traditional loans where early repayment might save on interest, Shopify Capital’s merchant cash advances have a fixed fee that does not decrease with early payment, meaning there’s less incentive to repay early . I’ve wanted to post about this for a long time and could never quite articulate my disdain… but this is it 👆 Am I wrong? 🤷‍♂️

So back in 2019, I started a DTC e-commerce T shirt store. Ran it for 3 months, wasted $5000 on fb ads and ultimately shut it down. Here’s why I failed, what I learned and why you should NOT start a dropshipping business - First off - why Dropshipping? It was the coolest thing I could think of at the time. Me and my wife loved brainstorming creative projects. We thought we could make interesting designs, put them on T shirts and sell them on the internet. It sounded so much fun. Plus all the internet gurus make everything sound so easy and sexy. I was also able to find companies who could print T shirts on demand and fulfill customer orders. We didn't have to worry about the printing and delivery of orders. So convenient right! All we had to do was come up with the designs, set up a store and figure out a way to sell T shirts. Easy peasy. Right?? So I watched a few videos, read a few blog posts, listened to “gurus” on podcasts and started building my Shopify store. Hooked it up with a Facebook page and started running FB/IG ads. As you can imagine, I failed miserably. Top reasons for failure - 1. I had no idea of the fashion or apparel industry. I didn’t know who my user was, and why would they buy 2. Total FB ads newbie, so ended up pouring money down the drain. FB needs so much data it’s impossible to get meaningful results on a tight budget Have to spend a ton just to learn what type of users will see an ad, how many will click on it, and how many will buy your product 3. Didn’t own fulfillment. Margins were wafer thin, most of the money went to the company that did the printing and fulfillment. I made a loss on every sale. Yea I was naive as sh*t 🥲 But it was a crucial lesson for me. Since then, whatever project I start, has to meet the following conditions - 1. Fat margins 2. Organic traffic (via SEO) 3. I personally understand the ICP and industry well. These rules have been very useful for me.

Where would you apply the Shopify theory? The founder of Shopify struggled to raise funds in the early days. Investors didn’t like the size of the target market because there were only about 40–50 thousand online stores at the time. Even if Shopify captured 50% of the market, it still wouldn’t be enough for a venture-backed startup. A few years ago, when Shopify was valued at $100 billion, the founder ran into one of those investors, who asked, ‘What did I miss back then?’ ‘You were absolutely right about the small number of online stores being a problem. But what you didn’t see was that Shopify was the solution to that problem! There were only 40,000 online stores because opening a store was hard, time-consuming, and expensive. Shopify made it easy, fast, and affordable.’ ‘A lot of people talking about markets don’t understand that there’s a key detail hidden between supply and demand—friction, which prevents potential demand from being met. My theory is that reducing friction is the simplest way to change the world, and it’s often overlooked.’ Let me add that 'friction' isn’t what stops things from happening altogether; otherwise, there wouldn’t have been 40,000 online stores back then. Friction is what prevents exponential growth. Shopify eliminated that friction, and now there are 1.75 million stores on their platform. So where else can we apply the Shopify theory? What else exists in small numbers right now? What’s stopping it from growing exponentially? What platform needs to be created to remove that friction?

If you’re selling a high-ticket offer, stop winging it on calls. You need a strategy that closes. Here are 5 questions that are proven to break objections and get prospects saying “YES” to your program. When you’re on a call with a potential client, you have to guide the conversation with the right questions. Questions that reveal their pain points, deepen their desire for transformation, and lead them to the only logical conclusion: 👉 that your offer is the solution. ❗BUT REMEMBER❗ these questions need to be tailored specifically to your niche, your offer, and your client’s unique situation. These are not one-size-fits-all scripts, but a powerful starting point to build your personalized sales conversations. With that being said, here are the questions ⤵ ➡ “What’s your biggest challenge right now?” This is your opener. You need to understand where they’re struggling. Let them vent. This creates rapport and helps you identify what matters most to them ➡ “Why haven’t you already achieved [goal]?” Get them to reflect on what’s been holding them back. If you’re a DTC business and want to make $$$ this season, you need to get your sh*t together with your returns policy right now. 44% of customers base their holiday purchases on the business's return policies. If you don’t want to be like the DTC businesses that lost over 743 BILLION in return revenue last season (a 20-25% consumer return vs. 14.5% outside BFCM), do this: 1. Create a SPECIFIC FAQ Page for your BFCM BFCM sales are not like your weekend or flash sales, especially if there are layers to the sale. Make sure you answer questions about the sale clearly. 🤨 How do you use the discount? 🤨 What does it apply to? 🤨 Are they stackable? And so one. The more details you can provide, the fewer customer tickets you will receive.  Make sure you include your FAQ Page link in all your promo emails and make it easy to find on your website. 2. Update your policy or create a specific BFCM policy Offset your returns and profit loss by creating a more dynamic return policy. You can have a specific one just for the BFCM or Q4 sale period. We often change our return policy to exchange for another item or a gift card to use later.  We also expand the return window due to the high volume of orders and longer shipping periods. These are just examples of what we do to help our clients keep their customers happy while offsetting profit loss. Think about how you can do the same for your customers based on your business model! TLDR: -Know what your return policy is -Spell it out -Reference it in your emails, site, social, etc. Thank yourself later.

You should convert your sales quickly. If your price-point is between $2,000 & $10,000, It should not take 3-5 months for a client to purchase. If this is happening, You are selling to the wrong audience. You should be able to close on the first or second call. In this video, I explain exactly how.
