What motivates you to work on your startup?

Let's face it, it's damn bloody hard. Yet, I continue to work on Geeks and Experts

I made a lot of mistakes as a first-time founder and I am still learning.
I wasted time on building the perfect product.
I am working on a marketplace.
I am bootstrapped.
I work in B2C.

These are all challenges I found myself fighting. It feels like an uphill battle but I know that there is potential to succeed if I keep going.

I remind myself of the journey and not the outcome. I remind myself that I chose to work on this. I remind myself that I get to learn and connect with others. What else do you tell yourself when you need motivation?

  1. 8

Yes, most of the time, it's a typical day or a bad day. Great days are unusual, but you must embrace them when they come. Something I noticed as an entrepreneur, we're more often in conflict with ourselves. We must celebrate the great days. It's so important.

Another thing I do when I need motivation, I focus on something completely different: sports or family.

    1. 5

I love that! I definitely agree that what you do on your bad days matters more than what you do on the good days when everything is going super well!

All the best and keep fighting the good fight! What are you working on btw?

      1. 3

Thanks, man 🙏 I'm currently building https://scheduled.so - a Notion extension to schedule LinkedIn posts - as a solo founder :)

        1. 3

Love your comment but also your landing page @Julclt! i'm also onto a social media/Notion integration and was wondering how it's going for you. Is it hard to find customers?

          1. 3

It's hard to have a steady acquisition 🥵 I have to create content every day. But I had good traction when I launched the product with my community. Today, I have more than 400 users and ~20% of paying users.

        2. 2

Oh nice, I am going to check it out. I was using LinkedIn Radar to schedule cold messages.

          1. 2

Yeah! Have a look and let me know if you have any questions :)

  2. 4

Haha, never ever give up on your dreams!

You started this because you believe it can succeed, even if it fails you gave it your best. This is all part of learning! :D and be proud of yourself and your product!

When it gets tough I just take a few minutes for myself and listen to Beast - Southpaw and the game is on again! :D

PS: just signed up on your platform!

    1. 1

YAY! Thanks so much, Muneeb. I agree there is a lot to be grateful for and learn from this whole experience. I've met such amazing people and felt so inspired.

      1. 2

Haha, yes that's exactly how it is!

Good luck and just have fun ;)

  3. 4

Reading r/antiwork every day and realizing what a fucking dystopia the corporate workplace is

I'd rather die than to have to return to that hellhole.

    1. 1

Ahhh I didn't know about that subreddit. I'll check it out.

  4. 4

I think the easiest thing is to remember that if it's not this then it's the soulless grind of a corporate job or a "stable" 9-5.

    1. 1

Agree! This is a choice I made and I get to learn and meet amazing people.

      1. 2

Truthfully, meeting amazingly creative and hardworking people all over the world it's such a perk in itself.
In my previous jobs, the only people I met were the team mates of a project I was in (that you couldn't really get to know them because you were busy with work).

Came here to just write this one word. :)

  5. 3

I always say to myself that done is better than perfect and that I'll suffer anyway. However, I can choose what to suffer from -- from discipline and growth or from the pain of regret.

    1. 1

I love that! It really sums it up so well.

  6. 3

Help one person. Don't care if that isn't the right strategy for building the next unicorn. Make one person's life a little better.

    1. 1

I totally agree! That's what I changed in my approach with this product recently. Earlier I was talking to everybody and therefore to nobody.

  7. 3

My aim is to produce software that people can benefit from and use continuously. Thanks to this software, I can sustain my life.

    1. 2

Nice! Build something people want. Great motivator.

  8. 3

I think if you are long enough in that bubble you can never have a normal job again 😅
But seriously if you are convinced of the products that you build and you love doing that there is no better way of life.
If I think about what I would do if I don't need to work anymore it's still the same life I would choose over and over again 😉

    1. 2

That's a great way to put it! I totally chose this life and I GET to do this.
That in itself is such an amazing intrinsic motivator.
What are you working on btw?

      1. 2

        😊
I have a background in web development and AI and am currently working on a way to combine both with https://cargoship.sh (still very early).

  9. 3

"If you need inspiring words, don't do it."

    1. 1

You say it as it is!! I agree, you can't need inspiration to choose this job.

      1. 2

Yea, but the quote is from Elon Musk. :)

  10. 2

    Personal reasons:
I struggle like many to stay healthy and fit, I consider myself a foodie so I always want to try the next amazing dish and I am vegan. I find lot of people at this intersection that struggle with having a nutrition that make them feel great. I know how hard it is to make meal plans, to make shopping list, to be always on the look for inspiration etc.

Passionate about a problem I share:
I am super passionate about these problems, I work every day to solve them, I always in for a chat about these, and I love to help people and make a difference in their life.

Vision of the future & know how:
I know that every time someone chooses to eat vegan they save animals, they make a more sustainable choice for the environment and I believe eating vegan can be super exciting, effective and easy. I know this can be the most rewarding choice one can make in a lifetime because I have spent years learning about nutrition, cooking, going to restaurants, working in them, designing products and services, creating new recipes, experiementing with all of these together.

Part of a community & activism:
I am super excited to see the massive growth of the vegan movement every year! And I want to support every single one of them to make the most out of it. I don't wish for people to go through all the boring and unnecessary parts of learning a new way.

    Values:
I know we all need to give back to make the world a better place, and I chose this to be my life mission, to make eating and cooking vegan as exciting, effective and easy as it can possibly be.

I hope this can help you, many times you just need to look inward and take some time off to clear your mind and know what is that you truly want to see out there. Money and fame are mere illusions and are not enough to carry on your journey as a founder.

    1. 1

These are amazing motivators! Great going.

      1. 2

@SnehaSaigal Thank you ! Are you also a founder?

  11. 2

As a finance executive, here's my lens. It's one of the very few ways to build (generational) wealth and impact the world in the way you want to. That said, it takes relentless grit.

    1. 1

Relentless grit is so true! If you're in it for the long term and to play the infinite game it is possible.

  12. 2

For me. There are several reasons but the one being my company laying off people despite showing loyalty. I was like “fu** it, I can make it myself and no harm if I failed.”

    1. 1

Very valid in today's environment Ivan! You gotta look out for yourself.

      1. 1

Companies expecting loyalties but when you really committed to them. All they do is giving you up. Not being hateful but like you said "YOU GOTTA LOOK OUT FOR YOURSELF."

  13. 2

I've found that asking myself what the reasons are for wanting to build a business, and returning to those core reasons from time to time helps refuel my passion and drive and push me to further. For me they are financial independence and freedom to pursue the things that I love and am passionate about without the limitations that come with being attached to a location or schedule that comes with being employed by an org.

    1. 1

The WHY is the most important and it cannot be only money and fame. Freedom is definitely top of the list!

  14. 2

Want to be my own boss and also I'm having a kid 🙂

    1. 1

That's amazing! Congratulations. Time with family is priceless.

  15. 2

For me, seeing something I created from the ground 0 getting form and getting bug with customers and stablishing our initial view is invaluable

    1. 1

It is exciting, thrilling, nerve-wracking all at once :) What are you working on btw?

      1. 2

A “super Slack” 😊 I’m currently in the user validation phase. Could you fill this form (https://ha284lvoq27.typeform.com/to/D1n8tEbl) and help me on that?

  16. 2

For me, seeing other indiehackers succeed is a huge motivation for me to continue on my stuff even when stuff is not working out

    1. 2

Yep, we're all in this together :)

  17. 2

I’m new to the Indie Hacker game; I’ve wanted to build something for years but had to wait til something really struck my passion.

as cheesy as it sounds… — helping others through technology really keeps me focused on the end goal.

    1. 1

      Intrinsic motivation is amazing!

  18. 2

Definitely the ability to get up and do what matters.

    1. 1

For sure! I agree it is such a great opportunity.

  19. 2

I mean I get to roast startups and get paid, it's pretty motivating.

    1. 1

Tell me more!! How does that work :)

      1. 1

Sure you can check us out at roastd.io be warned though you might cry if you buy.

        1. 1

But I mean who wouldn't want to pay to be made cry a little, right?

  20. 2

I founded my startup with the goal of creating a solution for a problem I had personally experienced. My passion for problem-solving and desire to make a positive impact on people's lives was my biggest motivator. Although I have yet to turn a profit, I am proud to have been a part of it from the very beginning.

    1. 1

That's awesome! Scratching your own itch is what got me to start building my product as well. How long has it been since you started and what is the product?

      1. 2

Like Hyundai does in South Korea, twinzok.com is platform for car dealers to offer contactless test drives for customers. People can just unlock their car with their phone (like in modern rentals) and bring it back themselves, after the test drive. Dealerships save scheduling and personal costs. I started 4 months ago and am in the process of launching.

        1. 1

That's really cool! I don't know much about that industry but it sounds like something really unique - I've never heard of such a concept before.

  21. 2

    Hi @SnehaSaigal,

I don't think you need a dose of motivation to keep working on your startup, I think you need to have a list of reasons why you're doing what you're doing and remind yourself of it every time you doubt yourself.

    1. 2

True, Tiberiu! Motivation is fleeting and does not always help. Instead, actionable items that move the needle work and a reminder of your WHY is always good.

  22. 2

I just love building products from scratch.

    1. 1

      The feeling is amazing!

  23. 2

The knowing that whether i want or not i have to make it, there is no other way out.

    1. 1

Way to go! Try and try until something works.

  24. 2

My biggest motivation is the feeling you are building something which brings some value to someone else. Seeing your customers happy can compensate for all the stress startup can bring.
Also freedom, lack of corporate things, better work-life balance...

    1. 1

Agree! The positive feedback and testimonials from customers really motivate.

  25. 2
    • Customer happiness
    • Good revenue
    • Good team
    • Fun & Work
    1. 1

Ahhh revenue! That is what I am working toward right now, it is tough but I know it's possible.

  26. 2

A lot of people in this community are motivated by getting rid of that 9-5 job. I get that, but we should also do our best to imagine what running our own business will be like.

It's hard. Really hard. Much harder than the 9-5. But, the difference is that you are creating value for you, instead of faceless shareholders.

If we're just motivated by leaving our 9-5 or by being our own boss, we're probably going to lose that motivation quickly. I think it's more important that we pick a space we're passionate about; where we truly care about our customers. Then we create a business which can grow, and one which we won't hate in a few months.

    1. 2

Very few people say this out loud, Kris. I completely agree with you. Everyone has a different risk appetite and everyone has different motivators to start. It is so crucial to be sure of the why and see how much you can tolerate uncertainty, no fixed salaries and so on. And for how long as well! Or else this journey can get tougher!

  27. 2

The thought of having a 9-5 for the rest of my life

    1. 1

Massive upside and very small downside if at all of doing your own thing!

  28. 2

We set up an internal Discord channel called #customers, and all new accounts appear in real time. Amazing feeling when it keeps beeping.
We ask people some onboarding questions, and those answers go there.
We ask for NPS with a form for warm words, and they come.
The whole team is motivated and cares about those new regs. Some try to reach them; others keep working on a better website, onboarding, product experience, and sales offers.
Looking forward to opening the #subscriptions channel very soon :-) It feels amazing when it lives while you sleep.

    1. 1

Just the idea of having something out there in the world that you have created from scratch is such a beautiful feeling. Congrats on the amazing work! Keep going.

  29. 2
    1. Solving challenging problems while developing the product.
    2. Receiving positive feedback and praise from satisfied customers, which provides motivation and drives you to exceed expectations.
    3. Lastly, experiencing growth in Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR).
    1. 1

Those are all really valid points Azhar! Great going. What are you working on? And how long has the journey been so far?

      1. 2

I've built two SaaS companies previously and grew them to 7 figure ARR. (ContentStudio.io and Replug.io)

Nowadays, working on Usermaven.com which is a privacy-friendly analytics tool for websites and SaaS businesses. We shared our case study of the launch on Indie hackers. (https://usermaven.com/blog/our-ltd-story)

        1. 1

Nice! I am going to check it out now.

  30. 2

While I was employed, I motivated everyone around me to move, to do ambitious things. I dragged everyone to cool projects.

But at one point I realized that the same thing had to be done in entrepreneurship, where this behavior was more appropriate, where you could make more money and have more freedom of choice.

    1. 1

That's well said, Daniil! If you can do it for others why not do it for yourself?
How long have you been on this journey and what's the most exciting project you've got to work on so far?

  31. 2

I like to create libraries which other people can use. It gives a me a good feeling other people reuses the code I have written.

    1. 1

That's super interesting! How long have you been building this library?

  32. 2

When you get unmotivated, always thinking about your ultimate your. It's like a helping hand to me and works every time. Also think about the ways how doing that job is cool and enjoyable. Never forget that you're improving yourself so you're different than many people. Wish you the best of luck with your prospective startup.

    1. 1

Thanks for the kind words, Onat! You are absolutely right. The process of doing this itself is so rewarding. I need to build the resiliency to stay on path even when it's tough.

  33. 2

Customers that rely on my product for their business. It's that simple.

    • If I don't improve the product or fix bugs, I let them down.
    • If I don't do marketing or sales, I can can't keep running the product, I will let them down

If you are not at this stage yet, be well sure you have customers before you get started.

    1. 1

Fair enough! I can imagine having customers is one of the biggest motivators, I have customers but not too many active and paying users. That's where it gets a bit tough to stay afloat and keep working on it even though I see value in the product.

  34. 2

Opportunity to change smth i guess

    1. 1

Probably, in fact, I keep wondering what else haven't I tried. It's confusing sometimes when you don't know if you've tried it all or it's just a phase.

  35. 2

What keeps me going is being able to have a plan B if things don't work out with my 9-5. With all the layoffs happening right now it's comforting to have additional income streams.

    1. 1

Very well! I admit that having more than one plan is the way to go.

I too started working on some freelance content writing while working on my startup. It removes the pressure that comes from having all eggs in one basket.

  36. 2

I think it's something similar to yours, knowing it's something I get a choice in. Knowing that many before me have faced similar struggles, knowing that there is no failure here, either learning (failure as some see it) or "traditional" success.

    1. 1

So true! We are all in this together. And the beautiful thing is once you become an entrepreneur you have an unsaid understanding that only other entrepreneurs will have. That is so beautiful!

  37. 2

Dedication and Consistency by doing hard work that my start up will grow.

    1. 1

Put in the deep work and the results will follow. Great going.
What are you working on by the way?

      1. 2

Thanks a lot for your compliment. Best wishes for you also as a business starter. I'm running my own Digital Marketing Agency, Clothing Brand , and also brand activation agency.

  38. 2

My main motivation is the belief that I'm building great things that a set of people/businesses need. I do feel unmotivated or low at times when metrics plateau for a few days or weeks, or a bunch of support tickets come in that I don't want to deal with, or a sale falls through, but so far I've just had to remind myself that it's a phase and that the general trend has been up, maybe take 2-3 days break. Once I've taken a break I feel refreshed, and so far the metrics always start to tick upward again...hopefully that lasts!

    1. 1

Well said, Chris. I think taking a break and stepping back is helpful sometimes.

I remember last winter when I needed to move away from my product to fully come back with a better strategy and approach. The results speak for themselves as I have fresh ideas on how to do more acquisitions and I also have less pressure since I am diversifying the streams by taking up some freelance projects.
