Consolations: The Solace, Nourishment and Underlying Meaning of Everyday Words Hardcover – November 7, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
In Consolations David Whyte unpacks aspects of being human that many of us spend our lives trying vainly to avoid - loss, heartbreak, vulnerability, fear - boldly reinterpreting them, fully embracing their complexity, never shying away from paradox in his relentless search for meaning.
Beginning with ''Alone'' and closing with ''Withdrawal'', each piece in this life-affirming book is a meditation on meaning and context, an invitation to shift and broaden our perspectives on life: pain and joy, honesty and anger, confession and vulnerability, the experience of feeling overwhelmed and the desire to run away from it all. Through this lens, procrastination may be a necessary ripening; hiding an act of freedom; and shyness something that accompanies the first stage of revelation.
Consolations invites readers into a poetic and thoughtful consideration of words whose meaning and interpretation influence the paths we choose and the way we traverse them throughout our lives.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2025I have given this book as a gift to many people who are grieving. Those are times when my words are never enough, but this book says what the heart needs to hear. It was given to me when I was grieving, and just reading the words in the book provided me with solace and comfort.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2024I love how the author brings our attention to the nuances of words/language and gives us his interpretation of each word.
I could read it many times, so much to reflect upon.
Here is one of my favorite passages:
”BEAUTY is the harvest of presence, the evanescent moment of seeing or hearing on the outside what already lives far inside us; the eyes, the ears or the imagination suddenly become a bridge between the here and the there, between then and now, between the inside and the outside; beauty is the conversation between what we think is happening outside in the world and what is just about to occur far inside us.”
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2022Wisdom wrapped in beautifully crafted words.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2025The book is excellent; however the boxes in the two book's I have ordered through Amazon were bent the top or the book or on the book binding.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2021This is one of my favorite books of all time and I purchased several copies as gifts for my dearest friends. So sad though the the hard bound version is so poorly printed on paper hardly worthy of a recycled paperback. So many misprints and the binding weak and cracking. I would really enjoy having these thoughtful poems traditionally printed on real parchment and gloriously bound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well written
In this book, I found deep poetical reflections on well-known concepts that we never thoroughly ponder. The writing is superb!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just fantastic.
For me, David shares rare insights and brings practical guidance to help us untangle any unintentional meaning we have given to some of the most important words in our language. He navigates meaning through honesty and articulates himself with inspiring clarity. Bravo David.
