Living Forward: A Proven Plan to Stop Drifting and Get the Life You Want Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,845 ratings

Each of us has but one life to live on this earth. What we do with it is our choice. Are we drifting through it as spectators, reacting to our circumstances when necessary and wondering just how we got to this point anyway? Or are we directing it, maximizing the joy and potential of every day, living with a purpose or mission in mind?

Too many of us are doing the former--and our lives are slipping away one day at a time. But what if we treated life like the gift that it is? What if we lived each day as though it were part of a bigger picture, a
plan? That's what New York Times bestselling author Michael Hyatt and executive coach Daniel Harkavy show us how to do: to design a life with the end in mind, determining in advance the outcomes we desire and path to get there. In this step-by-step guide, they share proven principles that help readers create a simple but effective life plan so that they can get from where they are now to where they really want to be--in every area of life.

From the Inside Flap

If you're like most people, you want to lead a life of meaning and significance, joy and satisfaction.

But all the drama and demands we face seem to get in the way of our dreams, don't they? We're unsure about how to take our lives from where we are now to where we want to be in the next five, ten, or even fifty years.

We know we were meant for more, but it seems like the days are slipping by and we can't do anything about it. It shouldn't be like this. And it doesn't have to be.

New York Times bestselling author Michael Hyatt and executive coach Daniel Harkavy have both lived the very same story but they rewrote the ending. And their new book Living Forward will help you do the same thing.

In this step-by-step guide, Hyatt and Harkavy share simple but proven principles to help you stop drifting, design a Life Plan with the end in mind, and chart a path that will take you there. And you can work the process in just one day.

Imagine trading just twenty-four hours for the life you really want. It's possible, and
Living Forward shows you how.

It just might make you a better person
I got an advance copy of the book for review, but before I even finished it, I was clear that Living Forward was already making me a better human being. I read a LOT of non-fiction and the idea of creating a life plan isn't new (Hyatt and Harkavy admit that openly), but what makes this book so effective is how it holds your feet to the fire in an almost loving way (can I say loving and non-fiction in the same breath without coming off as woo-woo?). The first exercise in the book takes you deep into examining what you really want your life to look like in the future (akin to Covey's "begin with the end in mind"). Again, not a new concept, but this time, at least for me, a much more effective result. Maybe it was the way the exercise was worded, or maybe it was the depth with which the authors explained the process. Whatever the reason, where "7 Habits" fell short for me, Living Forward hits the mark. You don't just think about it, you feel it, and as the title of the book alludes, you build a plan to "Stop drifting and get the life you want". I am fortunate enough to get books like this to review all the time. Rarely do I buy multiple copies of the book for the important people in my life. This time, I not only bought copies for my clients, I also bought them for my mastermind group - people who help to hold me to a higher standard. This book was THAT important to me, and I have a feeling it will be equally important to them. A good portion of the content in Living Forward is similar to concepts I teach and use with my own clients. Why would I recommend they read this book? Because it goes deeper and augments the work I'm doing with them in an effective, efficient way that's relate-able to the creatives and the more linear clients that I work with. BOTH sides of your brain will be better off for reading this book.

Living Forward is a wake-up call on life. Some people experience the wake-up call when serious illness strikes, or with the loss of a spouse or job or anything valuable and meaningful that defines and completes a person. Wouldn't you rather have the wake-up call in the form of a life-changing book?

It may seem like a daunting task to think about having a vision for your life, and it can be, but I found Living Forward to be a challenging, yet friendly, coach, stepping me through a thought process that is life-changing.

Distraction is the word of the day and it is causing massive drift in the lives of people. Overwhelmed executives, stretched stay-at-home parents, side-lined creatives, and frustrated masses of people are drifting far from the life that is their best life, full of rich relationships, meaning, purpose and abundance.

Living forward helps the reader really take an honest assessment and recognize the drift then quickly moves into a gentle, but provoking look at where this drift will lead unless changes are made. We were created for purpose and we cannot lead others until we learn self-leadership.

Living Forward is not just for those in business, but for those who place a high value on relationships (or wish to do that) and want more from life. The steps outlined in the book are helping me to filter my opportunities to focus on what really matters. I am a champion plate-spinner, I want to do it all! I am learning that I need to reprioritize and reorganize my life and scale back on certain activities to make room for growth in areas that are important to me.

"The lesson is simple. You get what you focus on.... the future must be enticing enough to stay focused."
Hyatt and Harkavy call this Pull Power.

"So many of us have settled for what is, rather than what could be. We have convinced ourselves that things will never change. But they can change if we give ourselves permission to dream again. What kind of future motivates you?"

Give yourself permission to dream again, no matter your age or current circumstance.
YOU are worth the investment in time but you will need this book to step you through this thought process.
You will learn how to design your legacy, craft a life plan and make it happen.

    This book is for you.
It would be a great book to work through alone, with your spouse, your team, your small group or a trusted friend.

Living Forward is one of the most important books I’ve read in the past ten years!! My husband and I are reading it together and it’s been great for our marriage as well as our personal and professional lives. Living Forward is bringing clarity to our busy lives and unity to our marriage by helping us define where we are (now), where we want to be and what we want to be remembered for.

Personally, it's also giving me courage. The past year has been a season marked by good but very hard changes - for our family and my ministry/career. Designing a LIFE PLAN with clarifying priorities and legacy-leaving dreams, has created a filter to make some huge and somewhat-risky decisions with courage and confidence. Instead of drifting through life and being directed by circumstances and constantly changing demands, I’m able to step back and determine my course – not based solely on what I want now, but what I want most - for the life I'm living and the legacy I'm leaving

Living Forward is well-written, packed with personal stories and examples as well as wisdom, insights, real-life application and powerful tools to design the life you want and clearly outline action steps needed to get there! After I read through just the first three chapters, I ordered 12 copies to give away to family, friends, soon-to-be graduates, co-workers and staff. I highly recommend it for everyone who wants to stop drifting and start living a life with great intention, a clearly defined plan and a fulfilling purpose!

A thoughtful and proactive approach to life, presented in a relatable and practical way. In this concise book, Michael Hyatt and Daniel Harkavy lay out a step-by-step method for developing a life plan—a living document intended to help you map out how to get from where you are to where you want to go.

Hyatt and Harkavy don’t go into the finer points of mindset or success coaching in this book, and that’s what makes it so accessible. It’s written for anyone who has goals and would like to be remembered well. It’s written for parents and teachers and CEOs and entrepreneurs…even students. Truly, any adult can read this book and walk away with a written plan and the tools to execute it.

Because of my coaching background, much of the content felt familiar, but the planning was still a powerful exercise. Creating a life plan made me take a hard look at my priorities, my career, and my direction in a new light. And it’s such a quick read—I can’t believe I put it off for even a few months.

I chose to read this book at the top of the year, but it is certainly a powerful read at any time of year. Regardless of when you begin this book or your life plan, because the plan is a living document, there is no need to confine this read to a specific time. Honestly, now is the best time. Whenever now is for you.

If you choose to read this book (and you should—everyone should), commit to doing the work alongside your reading. I believe there is value in doing the work right away, while the content is fresh in your mind, and I promise you won’t be disappointed when you complete your life plan and feel a renewed sense of direction and intentionality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Live a more purposeful and meaningful life
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 9, 2016
This book has already made a difference to how I think about my life, and I haven't even started completing the exercises it outlines.

The book suggestions thinking about your eulogy - the words that will be said about you at your funeral. This really makes you think about how you're spending your time and makes you more conscious of the micro decisions you're making e.g. should I be looking at facebook or playing with my children? Which of those things do I want to be remembered for?

I love the idea of 'life accounts' as well. They're like bank accounts but contain your life capital. So you'll have a health account, an account for your signficant other, another one for your career, your children and so on. Your job is to make sure you're attending to all of these accounts and that you're spending the most time on the accounts that are your greatest priority. If an action doesn't help with a particular account then you shouldn't be doing it.

As I said, I haven't yet made a life plan but I have no doubt it will be a very potent tool to help me (and you) live a more purposeful and meaningful life.

Reviewed in Mexico on August 19, 2017
