Celebrate Lit Blog Tour: When the Mountains Wept by Kendy Pearson

Book: When the Mountains Wept (West Virginia: Born of Rebellion’s Storm Book One)

Author: Kendy Pearson

Genre: Christian Historical Fiction

Release date: April 5, 2024

War brought them together, but one lie holds the power to separate them forever.

Western Virginia’s Kanawha Valley is a hotbed of rebellion tensions and mixed allegiances.

Amid talk of war, Augusta Dabney tends her younger siblings and dying father. But when hatred sparks tragedy, peace is but a shattered memory. Heartbroken and desperate, Augusta searches for a way to protect all she holds dear.

Defying family and friends, Dr. James Hill declines a prestigious commission in the Confederate Army to join the Union cause as a Regimental Surgeon. When the Dabney farm becomes a crossroads of colliding forces, Major Hill commandeers their barn for a hospital.

He is running from his legacy, seeking penance for his past.

She is desperate to preserve hers, at any cost.

As a wise, former slave nurtures James’s battered faith, cynicism crumbles, and James discovers grace and belonging with Augusta and her family unlike any he’s ever known.

But when James comes face to face with his past, secrets unravel until deception ends in disaster, leaving Augusta with only one option.

And it is unthinkable.

Christian Historical Fiction books are a favorite genre. When the Mountains Wept by Kendy Pearson is the lastest book in this genre that I have read. It is Book 1 in the West Virginia: Born of Rebellion's Storm series.

I will admit it took a couple of chapters for me to get into the storyline. I enjoy stories set in the Civil War, but the storyline just wasn't making sense in the beginning, for me. Augusta Dabney and Dr. James Hill are the main characters in this book. Augusta Dabney is going through many trials in her life and then the war begins. Dr. James Hill decides to go against family and friends and joins the Union Army. He meets Augusta when the Dabney Farm becomes a Hospital to treat the Soliders during the War. Dr. Hill isn't too fond of Augusta until he really gets to know her. I will admit once I got past the first 2 chapters, I began to enjoy the book. Augusta and James both have "baggage" from their past that needs to be worked on individually. James really has some dark secrets and when revealed I was amazed at how Augusta handled everything. I feel the author did her research really well and makes the reader feel like they are there at the Civil War time. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Fiction books based in War Time. GOOD BOOK!

Kendy Pearson is a worship leader, Bluegrass fiddler, and Civil War reenactment enthusiast. As a veteran high school teacher, she loves to discover a pocket of American history missing from the schoolbooks and turn that pocket inside out. Her novels lead fictitious characters through historical events and settings, engaging with period personalities. And she always includes a romantic thread to warm the heart. Every story is a journey through tragedy, secrets, regrets, and God’s undeniable grace.

She is the recipient of multiple lit awards and enjoys public speaking and teaching writing workshops. When away from the computer, she relishes ice cream, snowy days, fireplaces, and maple trees. Kendy is the mother of four grown children and lives with her sweet hubby and two amusing miniature dachshunds.

More from Kendy

I was quite happy expressing my inner farm-girl and thriving at all things musical for decades. Until I found myself teaching high school history and raising three sons. I should have saved up a dollar for every war movie I watched! All the men in my family had a great interest in history. I remember watching the boys in a production of King Henry the Fifth, complete with Old English and death by sword. One year, I taught about the Civil War in three different classes, so that era became a favorite interest of mine. I read every Christian Historical novel I could find about the War of Rebellion.

Boy, did I have fun researching! For three months, I pored over the most incredible true stories of families and events, reading even soldier diaries. I created timelines and wrote note cards. I became the student again!

There is much of myself and my life in When the Mountains Wept. The female main character (Augusta Dabney) is part me and part who I long to be. She’s responsible, tough, brave, smart, farmish, doctorly—and she has red hair, freckles, and an Irish complexion that splotches and sunburns. My daughter influenced the 12-year-old sister in the story (she figured that out on her own). Will (Willamina) is a tomboy who will risk trouble for the sake of adventure. She is strong-willed and often has an attitude. (I’m pretty sure that last part was why my daughter figured it out.)

I enjoy a story that makes me laugh, so having three sons, I am pretty familiar with boyish antics. The 6-year-old brother added humor, and a saucy 12-year-old girl provided plenty of fodder, too. The romance between two very different but strong personalities provided an opportunity for a few laughs as well.

If a book makes me cry, it’s a keeper. My story contains painful truths, each rooted in my research. The characters experience the harsh reality of their circumstances. I cried while writing more than a couple of the scenes. It is just plain hard to wrap my head around living smack dab in the middle of war, where your neighbor is your enemy and your home is no longer your own.

I fell in love with the family I created in When the Mountains Wept, hence, I must not consign them to the past. They will live on in this series as each member of the Dabney family shares their own story of adventure, romance, sacrifice, and faith.

Blessings from the Heart of History, my friends!

Kendy

Beauty in the Bittersweet

Title: Beauty in the Bittersweet
Series:
A Thornbush and Juniper Story
Author:
Jessica Stone
Publisher:
Story Architect
Release Date: May 5, 2025
Genre:
Women's Contemporary Fiction (Christian) with romance

If checking off lists were all it took, Elle Reed could keep her life from crumbling around her. But her husband betrays her trust, her best friend’s recent diagnosis reveals a hidden trauma, and a secret Elle has been keeping from her mother has wrecked their Gilmore Girls-esque relationship. Her career may be the one thing she has control over, and she holds it tightly with both hands.

Then she gets a call she never expects—her mother has passed away suddenly, taking any hope of reconciliation with her. Discovering Catherine’s collection of devotional journals while packing up her home provides an opportunity to glean the wisdom she so desperately misses. But the journals reveal that her mother had secrets of her own, leaving Elle wondering if anyone in her life is who they say.

When an upheaval at work rips away the only stability Elle has left, she has to face her biggest fear. What will it take for her to surrender control to The One who’s had it all along?

Christian Fiction Romance is always a good genre. Beauty in the Bittersweet by Jessica Stone is the most recent book in this genre that I have read. It is Book 1 in A Thornbush and Juniper Story series. Jessica Stone is a new to me author and I was excited to read this book.

The first few pages in the book were a bit slow, but the storyline quickly picked up. The main character in the book is Elle Reed. Life is going downhill for Elle and she feels like things are out of control. Her husband does something that now she has trust issues with him. Her best friend had recent trauma and a diagnosis and Elle's relationship with her Mom has some hidden secrets. Elle is satisfied with her job and doing well at her job. Life takes a change when Elle receives a call that her Mom died unexpectedly. Rightfully so, Elle is devasted that healing the relationship with her Mom won't happen now. Elle is surprised when she discovers the secrets her Mom had been hiding in her Devotional journals. I really LOVE how the author includes a strong faith message in this book and that Elle realizes that her life is falling down because she hasn't been allowing God's plan for her life. Elle becomes a stronger person and relationships are healed when she gives God control and not her own control. The book is one of healing relationships, trusting others and Faith. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Fiction. GREAT BOOK!

Jessica Stone

Despite her start as a journalist for a faith-based news publication two decades ago, Jessica Stone has always loved fiction. She believes that her testimony and message come most clearly through storytelling, and she loves the process of developing deep—and deeply flawed—characters who find redemption and learn to accept grace, just as she is herself. Jessica and her husband reside in Raleigh, North Carolina, near her parents and other family. This story—and her confidence to write it—were inspired by her own Gilmore Girls-esque relationship with her daughter, who is living out her dreams as a fashion designer in Paris. Beauty in the Bittersweet is Jessica’s debut novel and the first in her A Thornbush and Juniper Story series.

It’s hard to hear God’s voice when you’ve already decided what you want him to say.

In the wilds of the rugged West, Betsy Smith discovers beauty in every corner—from the blazing sunsets to the wind murmuring secrets through the mountains. Yet, it's the magnetism of Gabe Manning, with his dark complexion and dashing demeanor, that draws her gaze. Having known him since childhood, Betsy sees in Gabe the embodiment of the heroes she admires from her a stalwart protector of the innocent, a champion of justice, a man of unshakable integrity, and a paragon of honor, guided by principles as steadfast as the mountains themselves— all while reconciling with his Arapaho Indian heritage. Yet, amid her admiration, Betsy longs for God’s reassurance that Gabe is the one for her.

As deputy of Shumard Oak Bend, Missouri, in 1875, Gabe “Little Sun” Manning sees the allure and harshness of frontier life. Amidst the chaos, he finds solace in the presence of Miss Betsy Smith, a compassionate schoolteacher whose independence and intellect captivate him as profoundly as her beauty. Yet, as their bond deepens, Gabe wrestles with doubts about his ability to fulfill the desires of her heart. He knows she's willing to forsake her career for a future with him, but can he offer her the family she seeks? Christian Historical Fiction is a genre that truly picques my interest. Written on My Heart by Heidi Gray McGill is the most recent Book in this genre that I have read. It is Book 5 in the Discerning God's Heart series. I have been enjoying this series since the first book.

I can honestly say this storyline had me completely engrossed in the book from beginning to end. The setting is 1875  in Shumard Oaks, MO. The 2 main characters are Betsy Smith and Deputy Gabe Tanner. Betsy is a School Teacher and has known Gabe since childhood. Gabe has always had a LOVE for Betsy, but she never realized how deep he loved her. It takes a situation happening to Gabe that makes Betsy's really realize that she has true feelings for Gabe. Gabe and Betsy both have had rough pasts, that could have prevented a relationship. Betsy grew up with an abusive father and Gabe had prejudice. I really love how they both decide to give the blossiming relationship to God and let God direct their paths.  The Book is Faith-Based and I appreciate how the author makes that the center of this book. The book is one of Healing, Trusting God, and commitments. WONDERFUL BOOK!
