How we hit #1 on Product Hunt

TLDR; Keep up the momentum, don’t spam, cover all timezones in the first 24 hours, be authentic and organic with your community, and engage with comments

Within 14 hours, we received 859 Upvotes and 472 comments, putting Appwrite in the #1 position as seen here https://www.producthunt.com/posts/appwrite-2

How did we do it?

🟢 Planning the Product Hunt Account
There were a lot of meetings and planning involved around putting together the best possible screenshots that not only describe what the open source project does but what kind of value it provides to developers.

🟢 Internal Preparations
We worked hard pumping our entire team about our Product Hunt launch, mentally preparing for all the excitement, and setting up shifts for each group of us to cover different time zones.

🟢 Preparing the Community
We prepared our community by mentioning our launch on Product Hunt ahead of time via Email, Twitter, other socials, and our Discord server. We explained the platform to our community and why they should be excited about the launch. It felt great that others felt the same excitement that we felt too! Use a scheduling tool to post on different social media platforms at dates and times so you can focus more on engaging with your community.

🟢 Asking for Support
Now that we prepared everyone for the upcoming announcement, we have written a statement asking others to celebrate with us during our release. Our announcement brought in more community members to our Product Hunt page. It was amazing to see so many people comment about their experience with Appwrite.

🟢 Asking for Individual Support
Many of the team members at Appwrite have an extensive network of developers and ask for support from friends who have used/are familiar with working with Appwrite. We realize that not everyone sees our announcements and we reach out and share this information.

🟢 Keeping Engagement
It’s essential to continue to comment and reply to everyone commenting on your Product Hunt page. Be thoughtful, respectful, and kind to every individual.

🟢 Make your Community Feel Special <3
We let our community know that we are all makers of Appwrite by creating a tool to generate an asset that shows their profile picture, name, and GitHub. Here are some of their “Makers Cards” here. Creating something personalized made our community feel more connected with celebrating our Product Hunt launch and feel like they are genuinely part of the success.

🙏 Thank you!
Good luck with your future Product Hunt launch, and thank you for listening to our story! If you are already familiar with Appwrite, feel free to support us here. <3

I've always wondered how you do it with a small team. I mean if I were google, I can hit #1 with any product by just making all my coworkers upvote :P

    This is super insightful <3

We did a lot of research into other successful ProductHunt launches and tried it for ourselves. Thanks to some last minute ideas and campaigns from our team, it worked!

Thanks a lot and yes you're right. Appwrite has been around as an open source project for about 3 years now. The ProductHunt launch marks the release of Appwrite 1.0 which is our first stable release :)

I think the hard part is getting the community support to begin with. The time spent slowly building the community really paid off!

    1. 2

You're right. As we we're building Appwrite over the past 3 years, we were able to build a super passionate community around the project. It really paid off.

Thanks for sharing, @christyjacob4! We'll be launching soon and will put these tactics to good use.

Curious to hear if you had a network of folks in Europe to help with upvoting in those early morning hours. It seems like that's a tactic that helps some folks get that crucial first batch of engagement!

You put a lot of effort into this launch. Nice.

Can you share what the outcomes where? Was it worth it?

    Wow, congrats!
I wonder, what was the effect of the PH launch – did the effort pay off?
