Why is working at summer camp important to you?
Summer camp is the one place for children where the emphasis is placed on community, social-emotional learning, and cooperation. These skills are crucial for making successful adults. Working at summer camps has given me the chance to shape the future and impact young people in ways that will outlive me. It's an extraordinary responsibility and an incredible opportunity!
Who is a camp leader you look up to and why?
Jeff Ackerman was a such a resource to me when we were trying to get Camp Highlight off the ground. I could listen to him talk about Elmwood Day Camp and the successes and struggles of that all day. Jeff is a compassionate and patient person and I have learned so very much from him.
What was the first time you were noticed and appreciated by an adult that wasn't your parent?
My 3rd grade teacher Mrs. Whalen asked me to keep the teacher's editions of the textbooks in my desk and help her grade during lunch. I was so proud of this. I felt really smart and necessary.
