9 Free Mini-Lessons From The Newsletter Accelerator Course

My Newsletter Accelerator course is a deep dive into how to launch, grow and monetize a newsletter.

It’s based on years of experience and success I’ve had growing my For The Interested and Daily Graph newsletters as well as my paid This Is How I Do It newsletter.

You can learn about the course here.

But to help you in the meantime, here are nine free mini-lessons you can implement immediately to grow your newsletter…

1. If you want 15% more opens for your newsletter…

A few days after you send an issue, re-send it to people who haven’t opened it with a new subject line acknowledging it’s a re-send (something like “Here’s what you missed”) and add a paragraph at the top saying you’re sending it because it looks like they may have missed it.

2. If you want to know more about your subscribers…

Include a question in your welcome email inviting them to tell you about what they’re working on and what problems they’re trying to solve. Just make sure you reply to anyone who replies to you.

3. If you want to make sure you don’t miss publishing an issue…

Create one (or two) backup/emergency issues to have on hand for weeks when you get busy and don’t have time to create a new issue. This makes it easier to stick with a consistent schedule without feeling pressure or guilt if life gets in the way of your typical routine one week.

4. If you want more people to subscribe when they hit your signup page…

Make sure the description of your newsletter is focused on the value subscribers will get from it – not just a description of what the newsletter is about or why you write it. Focus on the benefits, not the features.

5. If you want to get more subscribers from your blog posts…

Include a mention/link to your newsletter signup page within the first few paragraphs of your blog posts. Don’t solely rely on a form at the bottom of the post or in the sidebar – put a plug in the context of the article itself.

6. If you want a more effective signup form…

Don’t use the phrase “mailing list.” No one wants to join a mailing list because it sounds like they’re just going to get spammed and something that’s going to provide more value to you than them.

7. If you want to get more subscribers from social media…

Make the link in your social profiles a link directly to your newsletter signup page as opposed to a general link to your website. And in your bio, give people a specific reason to click that link and subscribe.

8. If you want to earn more money from your paid newsletter…

In addition to paid subscriptions, offer individual issues for sale. About a third of the revenue I earn from This Is How I Do It comes from people buying single issues.

9. If you want to become a must-read for your audience…

You need to publish at least once every two weeks and ideally at least once a week. You want reading your newsletter to become a habit for your audience and it’s virtually impossible to do that without a consistent frequency.
