RIVER OF LIES

by James L'Etoile

January 6 - 31, 2025 Virtual Book Tour

A Detective Emily Hunter Mystery

Detective Emily Hunter must be the voice for the voiceless

The homeless camps spread throughout the city of Sacramento are a topic of heated debate among residents. They’re considered undesirable—a nuisance—an eyesore. But when the camps fall victim to a string of devastating arson attacks, Detective Emily Hunter and her partner, Javier Medina, dive into the investigation and become acquainted with the real people whose lives have been destroyed.

The attacks only begin to draw attention when two of the victims are identified as the city’s former anti-homeless mayor and a camp social worker—but rather than strengthening the push for justice, the movement to completely abolish the camps intensifies.

The investigation becomes politically charged when Emily discovers who stands to gain from burning the homeless out of their shelters. She struggles to balance the high-stakes investigation with caring for her Alzheimer’s-stricken mother, whose condition is rapidly deteriorating. The investigation uncovers an unlikely suspect and a reluctant witness standing between Emily and the shocking truth. Can Emily overcome resistance and her personal obstacles to halt the attacks?

My Thoughts

RIVER OF LIES is written by James L'Etoile. I absolutely love anything this author writes and will make sure to pick it up one way or another. I discovered him during a book chat through The Back Room. This book drew my attention within the first few chapters.  This is book two in the series.  However it can be read as a stand alone.

Detective Emily Hunter might be one of my favorite book detectives. She along with her partner are tasked with the case of finding out who is behind the arson attacks on homeless camps. Factor in that bodies of prominent people are left in the rubble. Emily and her partner are put under pressure to close the case.

Emily has some personal baggage she’s trying to juggle along with the demands of this high profile case. Her mother has Alzheimer’s. She’s not doing well and you can feel the tension mounting for Emily through the pages.

I love that the author has chosen a hot topic. Homelessness in Sacramento.  You can tell he has expertise in the criminal justice world.  I found myself lost within the pages and not wanting to put it down.

The book is well written. The storyline engaging. Thank you the author, publisher and Partners in Crime Book Tours for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

My Thoughts

Happy New Year Reader Friends! Welcome to my first book review of 2025. Ambush on the Ranch was a great way to kick off a new year of book reviews and blogs. Written by Tina Wheeler the story kicks off with lots of action and suspense.

Janel Newman, an art gallery owner wakes up in the hospital with no memory of the last few days. She has to go into hiding at Deputy Sherriff Zach Walker’s house. It becomes clear that she may have seen something that she shouldn’t but she cannot remember what it was. A car bomb and a masked gunman show the seriousness one will go to silence Janel.

Shall we complicate the situation a little more? Janel also has a twin sister, who is also in hiding, becomes a little to secretive for Janel’s liking. She clearly is hiding something from her closest relative. Can Janel get her memory back to get everything righted?

The author has done a really great job in creating this storyline. It’s engaging, full of action, suspense, romance and of course faith. The author has woven together a perfect blend of all involved. I did not want to stop reading, and stayed up late one night because I had to know what happened next.

Thank you to the author, publisher and most importantly JustRead Publicity Tours for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

My Thoughts

Lethal Wilderness Trap is written by Susan Furlong. This book starts out with heart pounding action and suspense and doesn’t let up throughout the whole story. This is from the Love Inspired Suspense line so you know it will be a great read.

Ava is a recent widow. She and her daughter move from Detroit to live with her father in law, Mac in a secluded Sculpin Bay. The quiet and serene life she was hoping fades away when a body is discovered in the barn. Ava soon comes to the realization that her young daughter, Rose  may have witnessed something she shouldn’t have.

Special Agent Nolan and his K9 Creed are brought in. The body resembles a cold case from many years earlier. Nolan quickly finds out that this may be tied to human trafficking. He feels that Ava is holding back. He’s trying to peel away her layers when it becomes clear someone is trying to get to Rose.

Rose disappears and Ava isn’t sure who she can trust. Nolan is trying to stay ahead of the danger. I’ll admit everyone became a suspect. I loved the consistent action and suspense. I also loved Rose and Creed so much.

The book is well written. The storyline is engaging. Thank you to the author, publisher and Partners in Crime Book Tours for letting me read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

More from Dana

My life has gone to the dogs! No joke! While readers enjoy the Wolfe family humans, I hear on the regular that their favorite characters are the bloodhounds. In book #1, Wally was just an irrepressible disaster, and he continues his naughty ways throughout the series. In book #2, we met Pinkerton who is a model canine, unless squirrels enter the picture. And now, you’ll get to know Chloe who is fabulous, but I will venture to say she is going to be outshined by her mutt companion Brutus (you’ll have to read the book to discover his real name and identity!) As this book launches, I’m deep into writing the last two and there are a couple more unpredictable hounds you have yet to meet. Such fun! Thanks for galloping along with me on this series!

MY THOUGHTS

Hunted on the Trail is written by Dana Mentink. This is book three in the Security Hounds Investigation series. All books can be read as a stand alone. However the personalities  of all the dogs have made me laugh so hard.

Stephanie is a former cop. She is now working with the Security Hounds Investigation team. She left when she was passed over for a promotion. However, her ex boyfriend Vance was given the job over her.

Stephanie and Chloe are now getting ready to compete in a tracking competition. She’s excited to expand their skills but doesn’t realize she is walking right into a trap. An escaped fugitive has Stephanie in their sites and will stop at nothing to punish them.

This book opens with plenty of action and suspense. The author wastes no time in the heart pounding action and suspense.  Stephanie finds that Vance is trying to help her and she has to trust him and put aside her anger to make it out alive.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
